Conversation, books and growing independence give Wolsey House’s nursery its character. There are 52 nursery places within the primary school, with 15 and 30 hour places usually available. This is provision on Beaumont Leys Lane in Leicester, where early learning puts speech and communication firmly alongside the first steps in reading, writing and number.
In April 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. Children were comfortable and content, developing independence and spending sustained periods engaged in learning. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here gives substantial attention to language: children practise listening, expressing ideas and developing clearer speech. Adults encourage exploration and conversation, helping children attempt unfamiliar things. For a parent, the emphasis is on learning to communicate as well as beginning to read and write.
Stories and books provide an introduction to reading. Alongside these, children develop their pencil hold, experiment with marks and begin writing; number is another curriculum priority. Activities build understanding in stages. The combination gives children several ways to participate, from talking about an idea to putting something on paper.
Outdoor learning is part of the EYFS experience, with suitable clothing needed as temperatures fall. Nursery Big Pictures share the learning focus across the autumn, spring and summer terms, giving parents a starting point for conversations about what their child is doing. These termly outlines connect home interest with nursery learning.
Adults know the children and develop relationships based on affection and trust. In April 2026, children were settled and willing to engage with activities. This matters alongside the curriculum: confidence with familiar adults helps children explore and try something new.
Children needing additional help receive support promptly, and adults adjust activities to enable participation. The school also works with external agencies for more specialised support. Its approach to working with parents includes an open-door policy and regular SEND Coffee mornings, providing opportunities to discuss needs and exchange ideas.
For children learning English alongside another language, the early years emphasis is on communication and social interaction. Their home language remains part of that learning journey. This makes language development relevant to joining in with other children, as well as to classroom learning.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Leicester City Council’s online primary school application route. For August 2027 entry, the application deadline is 15th January 2027.
Nursery and Reception staff collaborate closely, supporting children’s move between the two stages. That continuity concerns the learning transition; families still need to complete the separate admissions process by the deadline.
Morning nursery runs from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoon nursery runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Each pattern accounts for 15 hours per week. These clear session boundaries help families plan collection and the rest of their day.
