Nursery at Woodland Grange Primary School

Teacher-led preschool and an on-site Forest School give Woodland Grange’s nursery its character. The preschool belongs to Woodland Grange Primary School on Beaufort Way in Oadby, with outdoor learning planned from preschool onwards. For parents, that makes the combination of early learning and a physical outdoor setting the clearest feature of the provision.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 February 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework covering development from birth to five. Communication, movement and social and emotional development sit alongside early literacy, mathematics, creative expression and learning about the world. The emphasis is broader than preparing children to read: relationships and physical development also belong in the learning programme.
Children’s interests help shape teaching. Teachers and support staff use everyday assessment to understand what each child can do and then adjust learning experiences, keeping assessment within their interactions rather than allowing it to interrupt them for long periods. This gives a practical purpose to observation: the next activity can respond to the child’s development and interests.
Forest School provides a named outdoor element, with a planned progression beginning in preschool. In February 2025, children across early years were learning to combine letter sounds to read and write short words. These are findings about the wider early years provision, rather than a promise that each preschool child will reach the same point at the same time.
An early years SEND coordinator works with staff, and parents can arrange a discussion about concerns through the school office. Support involves families in identifying needs, agreeing targets and reviewing progress. This gives parents a role in shaping help rather than simply receiving updates after decisions have been made.
Across the school, adjustments include picture-based timetables, changes to resources and quieter working spaces. Outside support can involve the Speech and Language Therapy Service or Autism Outreach Team, with parents involved in referral decisions. The school building also has two accessible toilets, including one equipped with a ceiling hoist and changing bed. These are concrete facilities to consider alongside a child’s individual care needs.
Attending the preschool does not guarantee a Reception place. A separate application through the local authority is required. For September 2027 entry, nursery attendance carries no priority within the admission criteria.
Leicestershire County residents apply online through the county council; families living elsewhere must use their home local authority. The closing date is 15 January, with late applications considered after those received on time. Keeping that application separate from the preschool place is essential for families planning their child’s next step.
For children with SEND moving from preschool to Woodland Grange, teaching staff and the SEND coordinator hold a transition meeting to gather information about needs. Extra school visits can be arranged where needed, including visits when other children are absent. This preparation supports familiarity with the new setting; it does not confer an admissions advantage.
The school office handles enquiries and arrangements for school tours. Contact it on 0116 2720401 or email office@woodlandgrange.leics.sch.uk. Families can also use the office to arrange a conversation about additional needs, bringing the enquiry and support discussion together before making their choice.
