Storytelling, sound play and growing independence give Wyvern’s nursery its character. Foundation One is the school’s part-time provision for children aged 3–4, based at Wyvern Primary School on Wyvern Avenue in Leicester. It offers an early start within a primary school, with language development running through both planned learning and everyday play.
Ofsted’s April 2026 inspection judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Talk comes first. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning, development and care into one framework for children up to five. At Wyvern, the early years curriculum responds to children’s starting points, including difficulties with communication and doing things independently. This makes learning to express a need or manage a familiar routine part of the educational work.
ALS phonics gives sound work a named approach. Foundation Stage children have a daily class phonics session, while Phase 1 explores familiar noises, rhyming, rhythm and combining or separating sounds aloud. These activities help children attend to what they hear before tackling written words. The focus is on the building blocks of reading.
Talk for Writing develops oral storytelling in EYFS. Children invent and adapt stories through small world play, helicopter stories and role play areas, giving their ideas somewhere to take shape. Stories also connect with the school’s Literature Spine. Play, books and ordinary routines provide opportunities to learn vocabulary and practise using it with greater confidence.
Relationships support the learning. In April 2026, early years children felt secure and content, with familiar routines and clear expectations. Adults supported children’s emotional development and relationships with others, listening closely and talking with them throughout the day. For a young child learning to explain feelings or join in, that attention matters.
There is a qualification to the positive picture: leaders were still working towards consistently high standards in every interaction between adults and children. Consistency matters because these conversations are part of how children learn language. Early years staff understood barriers such as limited independence and communication skills, and used their knowledge of each child to shape learning.
For concerns about learning, parents first arrange a conversation with their child’s class teacher through the office. Persistent concerns lead to a meeting with the SEND coordinator. This gives families a clear sequence for raising a difficulty and seeking further support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through Leicester City Council’s normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing Foundation One and applying for Reception as two decisions: a nursery place does not settle the later application.
Nursery enquiries go directly to the school on 0116 2661408. Foundation One operates part-time, so families should plan around that model. The school office can also be reached at Info@wyvern.leicester.sch.uk, providing a direct contact for correspondence about joining.
