Small groups and a classroom shared with older children give Little Learners Preschool its distinctive shape. North Scarle Primary School takes preschool children from age three, with early years sitting alongside Years 1 and 2 in Class 1. This is a mixed-age start to school life: older classmates can help younger children, rather than preschool operating as a separate setting.
Early years provision was graded Good by Ofsted at the inspection on 10 and 11 June 2025. Children developed independence quickly and were keen to explain their activities to adults. That combination of practical exploration and conversation gives parents a useful picture of the learning here.
Play gives children room to follow an interest, while adults also lead activities around topics. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, manage feelings and relationships, move confidently, explore the world and begin working with words and numbers. Creative expression belongs in that mix too. Indoor and outdoor learning spaces support both children's own exploration and planned tasks.
The mud kitchen provides a concrete example. In June 2025, children gathered mint from the growing area for pretend tea, then explained what they had done. Here, an outdoor activity became an opportunity to talk about choices and share discoveries. Independence had a practical purpose.
Number learning begins with Little Learners. Children handle objects and explore quantities through play, giving early mathematical ideas something tangible to attach to. Fine motor activities include dough disco, which provides practice for the hand movements needed for writing. Drawing Club also forms part of the early years programme.
Books connect nursery learning with home. Little Learners can participate in Read to Succeed before they can read independently: an adult signs their reading record after reading to them. Listening to a story counts, so families can join in from the beginning.
The June 2025 inspection also identified school-wide work on curriculum sequencing and securing basic writing skills. These concerns were broader than the nursery: parents should distinguish them from the specific positive findings about early years exploration and independence.
Early years teachers work with teaching assistants, and the preschool places importance on understanding each child's interests and wellbeing. Classroom visits and Stay and Play sessions give families a way to meet the setting before starting.
Communication with the school can happen through Class Dojo, email, telephone and conversations at the beginning or end of the day. These give parents several routes for sharing concerns or changes at home. Families with questions about special educational needs and disabilities can arrange a conversation with the school's SENCo through the school office.
Attending Little Learners does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Lincolnshire residents apply through Lincolnshire County Council; families living outside the county apply through their home local authority. Use the deadline for the child's intended entry year.
Class 1 combines early years with Years 1 and 2, giving the preschool a classroom connection with the next stage. That shared organisation is distinct from the allocation of a school place.
Classroom visits are welcomed throughout the year, and Stay and Play offers another opportunity to get acquainted. Contact the school office on 01522 778724 or email enquiries@northscarleprimary.co.uk to enquire about Little Learners.
