At a Glance

Stories, conversation and shared play shape the start at Stansfield Hall Nursery. Children aged three and four join a mixed Nursery and Reception class within Stansfield Hall Church of England / Methodist Church Primary School in Littleborough. There are 15 full-time-equivalent nursery places, with a full-time teacher working alongside teaching assistants. This puts nursery children in a classroom community with older early-years children.

Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the October and November 2024 inspection. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery curriculum uses Development Matters alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with learning matched to children's development.

The Nursery Day

Language gets sustained attention here. Adults help children retell stories, develop conversations during play and contribute to class discussions. In October and November 2024, early-years children enjoyed stories, poetry and rhymes, and developed speaking and listening from the start. For a child learning to explain an idea or join a conversation, those activities give language a practical purpose.

The EYFS combines physical development, communication and learning to manage feelings and relationships with early literacy, maths, creativity and exploration of the world. Children spend time pursuing their own play as well as taking part in activities guided by adults. Teaching includes individual support, groups and whole-class work, so the day has several ways to participate.

Read Write Inc supplies daily phonics across the EYFS. White Rose shapes early maths, using practical tasks and objects children can handle. Art includes developing control for drawing and choosing how to use those skills creatively. These are concrete starting points for learning, rather than a day built entirely around listening to an adult.

Both outdoor and indoor learning spaces are adjusted as children's needs develop. Staff also use observations to plan each child's next steps. Play and adult guidance therefore sit together: children's interests help shape learning, while adults decide what support comes next.

Care and Support

Home visits and sessions where parents stay to play are part of the nursery's settling offer. They give families time with staff and let children experience playing at nursery with a familiar adult nearby. In October and November 2024, early-years children became comfortable with routines quickly and enjoyed learning and playing together. Older pupils also helped the youngest children play cooperatively.

For concerns about special educational needs or disabilities, the class teacher is the first contact, with the SEND coordinator involved for further advice. The school's support arrangements include individual help and small groups, chosen according to the child. Families can request additional meetings rather than waiting for a scheduled discussion. This gives parents a direct route to raise a concern and agree the next steps.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application is required. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through Rochdale Borough Council, which acts as the school's Reception admission authority, using the normal application process and deadline.

The school's transition programme for children starting school includes summer visits where families stay and play. Children who are anxious can have extra visits and opportunities to meet their next teacher. Those arrangements help with familiarity; they do not replace the Reception application.

Practical Information

The nursery describes 15 funded hours a week for three- and four-year-olds, rising to 30 for eligible working parents and carers.
