At a Glance

Stories become building projects at Abercromby: in March 2023, children used planks and crates to make a Billy Goats Gruff bridge outdoors. That combination of language, imagination and practical play gives this Liverpool nursery its character.

Abercromby is a maintained nursery school for ages 2–5, rather than a nursery classroom within a primary school. Willow Tree Room accommodates children aged two and those turning three during the academic year, with space for 25 children and no more than 12 two-year-olds together. Oak Tree Room has 30 places at a time for children turning four that academic year. These are room capacities, not a current roll. Ofsted graded early years provision Outstanding following its inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning with care. Here that means developing movement, relationships and conversation alongside early number work, literacy, creativity and exploration of the world. Children follow this curriculum with additional individual or small-group support where needed. Forest School, PE and Beatlife music sessions also feature in the February 2025 SEND policy, giving children different ways to participate.

Books supply material for play. In March 2023, children brought books to adults themselves, retold stories using props and puppets, and invented versions of familiar tales. Older children explored the first sounds in words and practised combining sounds aloud. This makes early reading part of shared activity, rather than an isolated exercise.

For younger children, counting happened through painting and play dough; songs offered opportunities to listen and join in. Adults extended vocabulary through conversation, including for children learning English alongside another language. The attached woodland area also provided opportunities to learn about safe play and tool use. Learning involved doing things as well as talking about them.

Care and Support

Each family is allocated a key person from the room team. That adult plans learning around the child and records progress through OPAL on Learning Journals. Regular conversations give parents a familiar contact for concerns and achievements; the September 2025 SEND information report also describes a weekly class blog and termly Stay, Play and Learn sessions.

Settling progresses at the child's pace. The July 2025 admissions policy includes a home visit, visits with parents and meeting the key person before short separations. Children build towards half days, then lunch for those attending full time. Smaller steps are used when separation is difficult. Families should allow time for this gradual start.

Food guidance in the 2020–2021 family handbook describes packed lunches and a morning snack children serve and clear themselves, with milk or water and foods including toast, cheese and fruit. It requests voluntary snack contributions. The July 2025 enquiry form specifies lunch at home before an afternoon session.

The September 2025 SEND information report describes a single-storey, wheelchair-accessible building, nappy-changing facilities and accessible toilets. Support can include a language programme, small groups or individual help from the key person. In March 2023, support for children with SEND was effective, and safeguarding arrangements were effective too.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Abercromby does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal primary-school admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing a nursery and choosing a primary school as separate decisions.

For children with SEND, the SENCO's responsibilities include liaising with the next education provider so families understand their options and transition can be planned. That preparation concerns continuity of support, not an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Both rooms offer weekday mornings, 8.30–11.30am, or afternoons, 12.15–3.15pm. Under the July 2025 policy, the 30-hour pattern runs 8.30am–3.15pm Monday to Thursday and finishes at 11.30am on Friday. The shorter Friday matters for childcare planning.

Universal funded hours for three- and four-year-olds begin the term after their third birthday. The policy also covers eligible two-year-olds and conditional working-parent funding, subject to availability. Extra sessions can be bought when space permits, with payment monthly in advance; contact the school for current charges.

Enquire directly using the admission enquiry form or telephone 0151 709 5114, and arrange a visit by appointment. Access is via Bedford Street South. Holidays follow local-authority primary schools. The 2020–2021 handbook describes optional uniform, named spare clothing and a password system for collection; authorised collectors' details must be supplied in advance.
