Kindness starts in Nursery at Malvern. Children are taught it from the outset, giving the youngest pupils an explicit introduction to how they should treat others. This is the school's own nursery on Willoughby Road in Huyton, with September and January entry, usually in the term after a child's third birthday.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 1 and 2 April 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Three-hour sessions give the nursery day its basic shape: mornings run from 8.30am to 11.30am, while afternoons begin at 12.30pm and finish at 3.30pm. Eligible children can also take full days through the 30-hour funded offer. The distinction matters when fitting nursery around family routines.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together learning about feelings and relationships, language, physical development and early academic skills. Malvern's Nursery Learning Journey includes maths, understanding the world, making things and imaginative expression. In parent language, this means learning extends beyond early reading and writing to communication, creativity and understanding people and surroundings.
Learning Expeditions and vocabulary resources are organised across the nursery year. Phonics also begins in Nursery, introducing children to letters and sounds. In April 2025, teaching activities enabled children in early years to learn exceptionally well.
Across the school, classrooms use visual timetables and displayed learning aids to support communication. These give children visible prompts alongside spoken instructions. The school's communication approach also includes quiet zones and displays in muted colours, reducing visual distraction.
For families whose child needs additional help, the school Inclusion Team brings together a SEND coordinator and a learning mentor. Staff work with parents and outside agencies to arrange support. The No Limits strategy sets out the school's approach to making learning accessible, giving families a named starting point for discussing their child's needs.
Two trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants provide help with social skills and emotions across the school. Classrooms also have a quiet space where children can pause and process feelings.
Communication with families includes a weekly school newsletter and an invitation-only school app, accessed through the office.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place, and attending Malvern's nursery gives no priority for admission. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority process by 15 January.
Knowsley residents use the Knowsley application. Families living elsewhere apply through their home authority and may name Malvern as a preference. Keep this application separate from nursery enrolment: joining Nursery does not remove the need to apply again.
The nursery offer includes 15-hour morning or afternoon places and, for eligible families, 30 hours of government-funded childcare taken as full days. Choose the pattern that fits your family rather than assuming the standard school timetable applies to Nursery.
Application forms can be obtained from the school office or through the admissions page. Malvern recommends applying at least a year before the child's third birthday because nursery places fill quickly. For enquiries, contact the School Business Manager through the school office on 0151 477 8230.
