Nursery at Royal School for the Blind (Liverpool)

At a Glance

Tactile play, sound and small developmental steps shape nursery learning at Royal School for the Blind (Liverpool). Its early years provision supports children with special educational needs and disabilities, including visual impairment. Activities follow children's interests, with sensory adaptations giving them different ways to explore and participate.

This is nursery provision within the school in Wavertree. Ofsted's May 2026 report explains that the early years group was small and its experiences contributed to the wider findings, rather than being reported on separately. Those school judgements should not be read as nursery grades.

The Nursery Day

Play leads the learning. Staff adapt experiences through touch, listening and other sensory approaches, supporting communication alongside movement, interaction and problem solving. For a child with visual impairment, exploration need not depend on seeing an object or copying a visual demonstration.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together emotional and social development, language and physical skills, alongside early mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. RSB uses the Cherry Garden Framework to follow development in small steps. This gives families a picture of individual achievements rather than treating progress as a single leap.

Nursery activities include picture making, books at story time and ICT switches. Switch use provides a practical way to participate through technology. The EYFS topic plan includes Traditional Tales, Dinosaurs and Under the Sea, giving learning changing themes while retaining its developmental focus.

Learning also extends beyond the classroom every week. Local outings can include shops, the park, green spaces and the library, with activities adapted around sensory exploration and communication. These are opportunities to practise interaction in everyday places, linking classroom experiences with the surrounding community.

Care and Support

Medical care forms part of the school day. School nursing staff remain on site throughout it, and the curriculum makes room for health needs before learning begins. Across RSB, teaching staff hold or are working towards the mandatory specialist qualification for supporting pupils with multiple disabilities and visual impairment. Therapy input can include speech and language work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and music therapy, according to individual needs.

Early years care has specific safeguards. The child protection policy provides for hygienic nappy changing facilities, balances privacy with safeguarding, and requires children to remain within staff's sight and hearing while eating. If a child sleeps on site, the policy requires a suitable safe space and frequent checks. The policy expects early years staff to keep personal devices capable of taking and sharing images in a locked classroom cupboard; only official school devices are permitted in early years areas.

School meals follow an eight-week menu cycle, and breakfast is provided for pupils. These sit alongside individual feeding programmes and personal care routines. Learning is recorded through Tapestry, while Cherry Garden milestones are shared with families.

Support reaches parents too. The Family Liaison Officer helps with concerns and transition planning, and trained parent befrienders provide emotional support in the FLO's Hub. Transition into the setting or another establishment is planned around the child's needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families should discuss the next placement stage with the school and their placing local authority.

RSB's admissions route involves agreement between families, the school and the placing local authority. Local authorities make placements, with an agreed preference recorded in the Education, Health and Care Plan. Transition support is a separate matter: preparation for change does not itself confer an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

For general enquiries and admissions, contact the school office on 0151 733 1012. RSB is on Church Road North, Wavertree, Liverpool. Prospective families are invited to visit before admission, and the process may involve several visits while an individual placement is considered.

The school operates a uniform ordering system. Orders can be emailed or returned to school, with collection arranged through its ordering cycles.
