Settling well and building confidence give this nursery its clearest character. At St Columba's Catholic Primary School on Hillside Road in Huyton, nursery children join a Catholic primary setting with its own nursery teacher and teaching assistant. It is a school-based start to education.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good following its 12 and 13 November 2024 inspection. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Confidence and preparation for future learning shape the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision. In November 2024, children developed skills and understanding through learning that staff made relevant and memorable. For parents, the useful emphasis is on children becoming ready for their next steps, alongside gaining knowledge.
Understanding the world has some concrete starting points: the early years geography vocabulary includes plants, animals, places and change, alongside similarities and differences. These give children language for describing their surroundings and comparing what they encounter.
Links with families and previous settings support the start of school life. In November 2024, these relationships helped new children settle and gave staff an understanding of their individual needs. Emotional support also explicitly included Nursery, helping children become ready to learn.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school's 2024/2025 information report sets out a shared process. The class teacher plans support, with the SEND coordinator overseeing it; a teaching assistant may work with a child individually or in a group where needed. Parents are told how often that support will happen.
Communication has practical forms. Families of children receiving SEND support have discussions with the teacher at least termly, and a home-school link book can carry comments between adults. Individual Education Plans or Playplans set targets, while secure access through Provision Map lets parents contribute their views. The same information report describes wheelchair access, ramps at specified fire exits and an accessible toilet with space for changing. These details matter when discussing a child's care and access needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, even when their child already attends here.
For September 2027 entry, the school's 2027/2028 arrangements give no priority for nursery attendance. They set the application closing date at 15 January 2027. Use the local authority's Common Application Form; families seeking consideration under faith criteria 2 to 6 should also return the Supplementary Information Form and supporting documents to the school by that date. An existing nursery place cannot replace either application step.
Morning access for nursery children is through gates opening at 8:50am and closing at 8:55am. The school office operates from 8am to 4pm, giving families a separate window for administrative contact.
Nursery application packs can be obtained from the office or downloaded throughout the academic year. Return the completed pack by post, email or through the office, with the requested birth certificate, baptism certificate and address evidence. For SEND discussions, the office can arrange an appointment with the SEND coordinator.
No. A separate application to the home local authority is required, and the September 2027 admission arrangements give no priority for nursery attendance.
