Nursery at Waterloo Primary School

Four learning puppets, daily music and messy exploration give Waterloo’s nursery its own character within the primary school. This is teacher-led provision for children aged three and four, on Crosby Road North in Waterloo. The nursery aims to build confidence and adapt learning to each child’s abilities.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, while afternoon sessions start at 12:30pm and finish at 3:30pm. Each lasts three hours, with a separate lunch period between them. Those clear boundaries give families a concrete timetable around which to plan the day.
Learning includes observational painting, mud pies and a sensory story map linked to We're Going on a Bear Hunt. These are useful examples of the nursery’s approach: children explore materials, look closely and encounter a story through sensory activity. Making and investigating have a place alongside books.
Music happens daily across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the school’s early years provision. Children sing, play instruments and investigate sounds and rhythms outdoors, with opportunities to explore music during their ongoing classroom activities. Musical experience extends beyond a scheduled lesson.
The four puppets belong to Sefton’s Developing Lifelong Learners project and accompany children through nursery and Reception. They give the learning journey recurring characters. The nursery also aims to challenge children’s thinking while matching experiences to individual abilities, rather than treating every child’s starting point as the same.
Daily toothbrushing is part of the All Together Smiling Supervised Toothbrushing Programme, led by Cheshire and Merseyside. Participation requires parental consent. It brings a practical care routine into the nursery day, with parents deciding whether their child takes part.
School dinners are cooked in the school’s kitchen by Sefton catering service. Fruit, salad and fresh vegetables are offered each day, and the catering arrangements accommodate vegetarian diets, allergies, intolerances and other dietary requirements. Parents should tell the office about their child’s needs so these can be catered for.
Family support has a physical base here: a Family Well-Being Centre is attached to the school. Early Help is voluntary and brings professionals together to review a family’s needs, with parents taking the lead. This gives families a route to support with matters such as behaviour, housing or bereavement alongside their child’s education.
For SEND advice beyond school, Sefton SENDIASS provides families with telephone and email support, information packs and casework. These are practical routes for discussing questions about special educational needs and disabilities.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. The application route is Sefton Local Authority Admissions.
The learning puppets continue into Reception, providing a familiar thread between the two stages. That continuity is separate from the allocation of school places and should not be treated as an admissions advantage.
To express interest in a nursery place, complete the expression of interest form and return it to the office or email admin@waterlooprimaryschool.co.uk. Submitting the form does not secure a place; families are contacted after allocation.
Lunch is timetabled from 11:45am to 12:30pm. For enquiries, call 0151 928 4274. School tours can be arranged through the office with a member of the senior leadership team, giving parents a direct opportunity to discuss the provision before applying. Contact the school for current charges.
