Stories, rhymes and learning to play alongside other children give Littletown’s nursery its character. Independence matters too: adults establish routines that help children do more for themselves. These are useful foundations for a child’s first experience of school, with language and social learning developing together.
The nursery belongs to Littletown Junior Infant and Nursery School on Bradford Road in Liversedge. Staffing is organised through an Early Years Team covering Nursery and Reception. Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 May 2023; that judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together learning and growing independence. Here, regular storytelling and rhymes help children build vocabulary, while adults teach them how to play together. The practical implication is clear: learning includes communicating with other children and becoming familiar with routines, alongside the beginnings of reading and writing.
Essential Letters and Sounds is the school’s phonics programme. Nursery children have daily phonics teaching, giving early language work a regular place in their day. A nursery reading list also gives parents a starting point for choosing books to share at home.
Learning about how to learn starts in early years through the ReflectEd Teaching Toolkit. The approach includes thinking about how to tackle a task and reviewing progress. Outdoor learning is another school curriculum priority, and early years children need wellies. That makes footwear for outdoor activity part of the practical preparation for nursery.
In May 2023, inspectors found that preparation for starting school included building relationships with parents and a carefully organised transition. Familiar routines then helped children become more independent. For families, settling is therefore connected to both the relationship with staff and the habits children gradually learn.
Additional needs can be discussed with the class teacher or SENDCO. The school works with the Early Years SEND team, Educational Psychologists and Kirklees Outreach Teams, giving staff routes to specialist advice. Parents participate in discussions about their child’s needs. School facilities include a sensory room and accessible toilets; these are school resources rather than nursery-specific rooms.
Lunch can be a school meal or a packed lunch. Nursery school meals are normally charged and paid in advance through Arbor App, but some families may qualify for free school meals. Check eligibility through the link on the school’s lunch page. The kitchen uses seasonal menus on a fortnightly rotation. Switching between the two lunch options requires at least a week’s notice, so families need to plan changes ahead.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Littletown’s admissions page directs parents to Kirklees Council’s school admissions information.
Curriculum continuity is a separate matter. The early years curriculum is planned to build from Nursery into Reception, so the next stage connects with children’s earlier learning. That educational link should not be treated as an admissions entitlement.
A Nursery Application Pack is linked from the admissions page. General enquiries go to the school office on 01274 878136 or office@littletownschool.com. Prospective parents can arrange to look around the school, providing an opportunity to see the setting before applying.
Early years children need named wellies, a waterproof coat and a bookbag, with a sunhat for summer. Uniform Exchange helps families who need second-hand uniform through the school office. For medication, speak to office staff when bringing it into school so that the school’s administration procedure can be followed.
