Stories, songs and sustained conversation give Moss Hall Nursery School its clearest character. This is a maintained nursery school for children aged two to five. At the March 2022 inspection, Ofsted recorded an age range of three to five and 90 children on roll. The provision occupies its own school site on Nether Street in Finchley rather than forming a small class inside a primary school.

Children were found to be confident, safe and keen to choose a favourite activity on arrival. Well-established routines help them work purposefully, share and take turns. That combination matters for young children: independence is expected, but it is taught through a predictable day rather than left to chance.

The curriculum turns children's interests into purposeful early learning. In its March 2022 report, Ofsted described adults using familiar songs to start discussion and extend vocabulary. Children listen to and retell stories and rhymes, compose their own stories and take books home. These are concrete ways of building attention, imagination and early language before formal schooling.

Communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, physical development and early mathematical understanding all featured in the inspection. Staff explain new words and encourage children to use them appropriately. Litter picking and watching ducklings hatch also widen the day beyond table-based activities, connecting care for the environment with first-hand observation.

Each child belongs to a key-person group. Ofsted found that staff know those children well enough to notice and follow up concerns, while strong relationships help children feel safe and calm. Minor disputes become learning opportunities: children are taught to settle them effectively and often manage without adult intervention.

The 2022 report found that staff identify children's specific needs early, make necessary adaptations and enable children with SEND to join the same curriculum as their peers. Assessment is used to spot gaps and put support in place swiftly, an important strength for families seeking early identification rather than a wait-and-see approach.

There is no automatic entry to Reception after nursery. A family must make a separate primary-school application through its local council, including when applying to a school in another council area. No published admission arrangements establishing priority for Moss Hall nursery attendees were available in the evidence, so families should not treat attendance as an admissions advantage.

The everyday preparation is educational rather than procedural. Taking turns, listening to stories, sustaining concentration and expressing feelings all support the move into Reception, but they do not alter the separate admissions decision.
