Songs, stories and everyday sounds give Little Acorns its starting point: this is nursery learning built around listening and language. Part of Elmstead Wood Primary School in Mottingham, the nursery admits children from the term after their third birthday. That makes the birthday-to-term boundary the practical starting point for families considering when their child can join.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at its October 2024 inspection. This judgement covers the early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Two three-hour sessions shape the nursery timetable: mornings run from 9am until noon, and afternoons from noon until 3pm. These are distinct session windows, giving parents clear start and finish points around which to organise their day.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the concrete nursery examples are learning to recognise familiar sounds and developing language with rhymes, stories and singing. The emphasis is on hearing, speaking and joining in. Exploring how plants grow adds an early encounter with the natural world, connecting learning to something children can observe.
In October 2024, early years children paid close attention, explored their surroundings enthusiastically and worked together. They responded promptly to adults' directions. Those details matter for a young child learning both how to take part in a group and how to pursue their own curiosity.
The wider school grounds include an allotment and a wild area, alongside a large playground and field. These are features of the school site. Separately, the school-wide improvement action from October 2024 concerned giving pupils more chances to revisit and use important knowledge, so that learning lasts. It should be distinguished from the positive findings specifically about early years participation and behaviour.
Little Acorns has a nursery lead and teaching assistant support. For families, that identifies a nursery team within the larger school's staffing structure.
Additional needs support includes speech and language therapy through individual or small-group work where appropriate. School arrangements also include visual timetables and changes to learning resources. These provide concrete ways to discuss a child's communication or access needs with the team. Parents can contact the SENCO through the school office, giving concerns a clear route to the person coordinating additional support.
A Little Acorns place does not guarantee admission to Elmstead Wood's Reception class. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority process and meet the applicable deadline. Bromley residents use Bromley's admissions route; families living elsewhere apply through their home local authority.
For children accepted into Reception, preparation includes an informal visit before starting and opportunities for parents to meet the future teacher. The start is staged, moving from mornings to mornings with lunch, then a full day. These arrangements help introduce the next stage; they do not confer an admissions advantage.
Nursery applications are handled by the school. To register interest, email nursery@elmsteadwoodprimary.co.uk. The school is on Castlecombe Road, Mottingham, London SE9 4AT.
Royal blue jumpers or cardigans, grey skirts or trousers and white shirts or blouses form the school uniform. An unbranded jumper or cardigan is permitted. General queries can go to admin@elmsteadwoodprimary.co.uk, and teacher appointments can be arranged through the office.
