Nursery at Orion Ravensworth
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
In May 2024, early years children at Orion Ravensworth practised addition and subtraction vocabulary during mathematics, linking number work with language development. Orion Little Stars is the nursery attached to Orion Ravensworth on Ravensworth Road in Mottingham. It sits within the primary school, so families can consider the nursery alongside the school's arrangements for additional needs and communication.
In May 2024, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Mathematical talk makes learning about numbers a language activity too. In May 2024, children in early years were encouraged to return to addition and subtraction vocabulary. The practical value is that children practise expressing mathematical ideas as well as working with them.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) also starts the school's progression in geography and physical education. Geography introduces knowledge and skills that become more demanding later. Physical education begins with basic movement skills, giving young children a starting point for developing physical confidence.
For a child with additional needs, the school's support process brings parents into decisions. Families can raise concerns with their child's teacher or contact the SEND team at sendadmin@orionedu.org.uk. A discussion follows to consider the child's strengths, difficulties and next steps. Parents receive a record of that discussion, and written notification if SEN support is agreed.
Support follows a repeating cycle: assess needs, plan help, put it into practice and review its effect. Adaptations can include extra time to process information, introducing vocabulary ahead of teaching and using visual timetables. Individual or small-group assistance is provided where a need is identified. These are school-wide arrangements, giving families a concrete basis for discussing their child's support.
The SEND team includes a SENCO and a SEND Manager, each allocated 2.5 days per week to manage provision. The SENCO holds the National Award in Special Educational Needs Co-ordination; the SEND Manager has a Level 3 qualification in Principles of SEND and Level 2 autism training. Speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists are among the external professionals the school can involve when necessary.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the website of their home local authority, including those living outside Bromley. Offers come through the local authority rather than through an automatic nursery transfer.
For the 2026–2027 intake, nursery attendance confers no Reception priority. Familiarity with the school therefore needs to be considered separately from the allocation of places.
For children with SEND moving between classes, the school's arrangements include sharing information with the next teacher and holding a planning meeting. A transition book can also be arranged where it would help a child understand the change. This supports preparation; it does not alter the admissions process.
