Torriano Primary School Nursery Review

Sound comes before letters at Torriano. This school-attached Nursery serves children from age three on the Torriano Avenue site, placing the earliest stage of education inside a primary school for ages three to eleven. Ofsted's July 2024 inspection gives the clearest published glimpse of its character: Nursery children learn to distinguish sounds in their environment before formal phonics begins in Reception. That is a concrete, age-appropriate starting point rather than an early rush into worksheets.

The Nursery follows the early years foundation stage, where communication, physical development, relationships and learning through play build the foundations for later subjects. The latest inspection found that the wider curriculum is carefully sequenced. Its early-years example was specific: children encounter kings and queens through traditional tales, preparing them to revisit monarchy in Year 1. Stories therefore carry both language and first subject knowledge.

Early reading starts as soon as children join the early years. In Nursery, listening for different environmental sounds prepares ears for the letter sounds introduced in Reception. Ofsted reported in July 2024 that staff use strong subject knowledge, models, examples and repeated practice across the school. For Nursery families, the report's named sound work is the firmest published evidence of what this means at this age.

Torriano is a mixed maintained school. The 2024 report found that pupils with special educational needs and disabilities are identified promptly and receive adaptations, including children supported through the school's resourced provision for speech, language and communication needs. Families whose child needs extra support should discuss the Nursery's current arrangements and transition planning directly with the school.

Ofsted also found safeguarding arrangements effective in July 2024. This is a whole-school safeguarding finding, not a separate Nursery grade.

Reception admission after Torriano Nursery is not automatic. Nursery and Reception admissions are separate, and families must apply again through their local council. GOV.UK states that a primary application is required even where a school is linked to a child's current nursery. Applications open in September and close on 15 January.

No published admission arrangement establishing priority from Torriano Nursery attendance was available for this review, so families should not assume such priority. The educational sequence may be smooth, but admission is not automatic.
