Nursery at Fielding Primary School

Forest School, an early language programme and teacher-led sessions give Fielding’s nursery its character. This is provision for three- and four-year-olds within Fielding Primary School in Ealing, with up to 100 children per session. Children can start in the term following their third birthday.
The practical appeal is the combination of education and longer childcare sessions. Families can request mornings, afternoons or both, with an earlier breakfast option. Holiday childcare is booked separately, so the nursery can serve families whose working year extends beyond school terms.
An Early Years Teacher leads sessions alongside the nursery team. Morning attendance includes a hot lunch; the afternoon includes a lighter meal. These are substantial sessions rather than a short block of classroom time, giving families a choice between part-time attendance and a longer day.
The Early Years Framework supplies the learning standards, with teachers assessing children’s development. Observation, discussion and questions inform planning: the purpose is to work out what a child understands and what to introduce next.
Language has several named strands. NELI Pre-school Early Language Programme sits alongside listening activities, phonics and Read, Write Inc. Singing and music add another way to participate. In March 2023, Ofsted identified strong communication development in the nursery, giving this emphasis on language a concrete inspection basis.
Forest School provides an outdoor element, while an annual animal visit takes place on site with PTFA support. These bring experiences beyond language activities into the programme. Ladybird and Dragonfly are the named nursery classes, each with a class teacher.
Settling into routines and learning to manage feelings matter here. The March 2023 inspection found that early-years children adapted quickly to routines and developed secure emotional and social skills. Everyday care also encourages independence with toileting, handwashing and nose wiping; families experiencing difficulties can receive guidance and resources.
SEND support can take place individually, within a small group or in class. The nursery makes adjustments for individual needs and involves parents throughout, working with School Health or Educational Psychologists where needed. Developmental concerns can be raised through nurseryteacher@fielding.ealing.sch.uk. The Nursery Manager also holds a safeguarding role.
Food depends on the attendance model. The all-inclusive option adds charges for meals, snacks, milk and wipes alongside funded hours. Milk choices include soya, cow’s milk and oat milk. Families choosing funded-only places supply their own balanced packed lunch or tea and wipes. Packed food must be nut-free, and the nursery cannot refrigerate or heat it, which affects what parents can safely pack.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through London Borough of Ealing School Admissions; accepting nursery sessions does not complete that process. Treat the two decisions separately when planning your child’s next step.
Morning sessions run from 8am to 1pm, afternoons from 1pm to 6pm, and breakfast attendance from 7.30am to 8am. Term-time provision follows the school calendar. Families request their preferred pattern when applying; mixed patterns, additional sessions and increases depend on availability. Once accepted, changes, cancellations or swaps require written notice of half a term.
Universal funding covers 15 hours a week across 38 weeks from the term after a child turns three. Eligible working families can receive an additional 15 hours. Funding applies to term-time morning and afternoon sessions; breakfast attendance and holiday childcare are excluded. Funded-only places depend on availability and nursery admission criteria. The usual pattern is three afternoon sessions for 15 hours, or five afternoons plus one morning chosen by the school for 30 hours. Available sessions may replace these combinations. Families cannot request additional hours under this model. Contact nurseryadmissions@fielding.ealing.sch.uk for enquiries and current charges.
Holiday Club runs for around nine weeks annually and is booked through Ziggi Systems, with payment before attendance. Parents provide packed lunch or tea. Term-time uniform includes logo-bearing royal blue tops, plain grey bottoms and closed footwear; bring spare clothes and a water bottle. Morning drop-off is between 8am and 9am, afternoon drop-off between 1pm and 1.15pm. Late collection attracts charges.
