Nursery at South Acton Children's Centre

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

A real car for outdoor pretend journeys, woodland Forest School sessions and books to borrow home give South Acton’s nursery day its character. Play supplies the starting point; adults build learning around it. The nursery school sits within South Acton Children's Centre, alongside childcare and family services, rather than within a primary school with its own Reception class.

Children can join after their third birthday, subject to availability and satisfying the nursery’s admissions criteria. The 2017 prospectus describes provision for three- and four-year-olds with 60 morning places and 60 afternoon places. Those are historical session capacities. They should not be read as today’s vacancies.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes learning through play, covering language, physical development, relationships, literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Birth to five Matters accompanies it. Indoor and outdoor spaces are planned for children to investigate and pursue interests, giving adults material to develop into further learning.

At the inspection on 24 and 25 May 2023, language development was a clear strength: adults introduced vocabulary throughout activities and encouraged children to explain their ideas. Stories became role play with props, while listening games helped children distinguish everyday sounds before learning phonics at primary school. This gives talking and listening a purpose beyond a separate language activity.

Outdoors, the real car provided a setting for imagined outings in May 2023. Regular Forest School sessions take place in woodland, with exploration, natural art and pretend play among the experiences described. Children practise respecting boundaries while exploring their surroundings. The nursery lending library extends reading into family life, with daily borrowing and staff help choosing books.

Mathematics also reaches parents. During the 2024/2025 academic year, Early Years Pupil Premium supported staff training, participation in the NDNA maths project and resources for family learning. Parent workshops included packs for use at home, connecting nursery activities with practical follow-up.

Care and Support

Settling starts before the first session. For the September intake, families are invited to a July open day and offered a home visit, intended to involve the key worker or class teacher. Parents stay for the induction day, helping their child become familiar with toilets and routines. A key person takes responsibility for day-to-day care, giving families a regular point of contact.

Acorn Room, integrated into Oak Classroom, supports children with social communication difficulties. Holly Room supports mild through to complex additional needs. Communication tools include visual timetables, Makaton and Picture Exchange Communication (PECS); Bucket Group develops attention and listening. Therapists visit these rooms and provide programmes for staff and families to follow, so support can continue across nursery and home.

In May 2023, staff adapted learning precisely for children with SEND and worked with families and external professionals. Safeguarding was effective, with staff training and clear procedures for raising concerns. Emotion stations helped children recognise feelings and seek help when worried.

Meals for children attending extended days in the over-threes nursery can be purchased from a four-week menu rotation. Specialist diets and allergies are considered in menu planning. Lunch and tea attract separate charges, so funded learning hours do not cover every part of an extended day.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate primary-school application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. Ealing’s guide for September 2023 entry used eAdmissions; families should follow the applicable council admissions arrangements for their own cycle.

The summer 2026 newsletter described an option for leavers to return until they began primary school full time, arranged through reception. That offers continuity during a staged start. It is a care arrangement, separate from obtaining a school place.

Practical Information

The 2017 prospectus describes term-time morning sessions from 08:30 to 11:30 and afternoons from 12:30 to 15:30. It also lists breakfast, lunch and after-school clubs requiring separate bookings. Holly Room’s session runs from 09:30 to 14:30, with fixed holiday dates.

Funding guidance describes 15 hours a week over 38 weeks for three- and four-year-olds, starting from the relevant term after their third birthday. The January 2026 charging schedule also distinguishes children with 30-hour funding and charges for additional attendance, with hot lunch and tea billed separately. Ask the centre for current charges.

For enquiries, email admin@southactoncc.com or call 020 8992 0724. Reception arranges registration appointments that include a short tour. Full-time places. These are limited and allocated to parents working or training, so that condition matters when planning a longer nursery day.
