Nursery at West Grove Primary

Rhymes, songs and first steps in reading give West Grove Primary’s early years provision a language focus. Its nursery belongs to a primary school in Southgate, on Chase Road. Children normally join in the autumn term after their third birthday, subject to a vacant place. This is an introduction to learning within a school setting.
The wider school building has large classrooms and carpeted corridors. A library, rooms for art and for music and drama, and a field form part of the school premises. These describe the nursery’s school context rather than a separate nursery campus.
Language learning combines spoken words with the beginnings of reading. At the inspection on 7 and 8 June 2022, children in the early years were learning letter sounds quickly and combining them to read words. In parent language, that means moving from recognising individual sounds to hearing how they make a word.
Poems, songs and nursery rhymes also helped children develop language. The emphasis goes beyond recognising letters: children encounter words through music and verse as well as reading. Those are concrete examples of early years learning, giving families a picture of the language work that sits within this part of the school.
A designated safeguarding lead and safeguarding officers form part of the school’s protection arrangements. This gives safeguarding a defined team structure within the school that houses the nursery.
West Grove’s approach to fair treatment covers people using its services, including differences in disability, religion, nationality and race. For families, that establishes an explicit expectation of equal treatment across the school’s services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. The application route is eAdmissions; choosing the nursery should therefore remain a decision about the nursery experience itself.
For a September Reception place, eAdmissions is the application portal. Enfield’s admissions service handles queries and appeals against a refused school place. Keep the Reception application as a separate task, even once your child has started nursery: joining one stage does not complete the application for the next.
The nursery enquiry contact is admissions@westgrove.enfield.sch.uk. Families can also telephone the school office on 020 8351 9200, choosing option 2 for admission queries. Enfield’s admissions team can be reached on 020 8379 1000.
Visits to the school are welcome, and a virtual school tour offers another introduction to the premises. For help completing an application, families can use Edmonton Library, Ordnance Road Library or Town library. That provides a practical support route for parents who need assistance with the application process.
