Jewish Studies runs through the nursery’s learning, alongside daily opportunities to explore indoors and outside. This is Wolfson Hillel Primary School’s own nursery in Southgate, with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shaping its curriculum. For families seeking Jewish education from the start, faith is part of everyday learning rather than a separate addition.
Shabbat, Hebrew songs and Torah stories give that identity concrete expression. Children encounter Jewish traditions through practical experiences and singing, making this an important consideration for parents choosing the character of their child’s nursery day.
Adult-led activities sit alongside experiences children initiate themselves. The EYFS organises learning across seven areas; here, children build relationships, investigate their surroundings and encounter new ideas through both approaches. Daily indoor and outdoor learning gives them opportunities to develop these skills in different settings.
The early-years topics bring substance to that framework. Geography introduces recycling and seasons, with winter receiving specific attention. Children also compare cultures and begin exploring simple maps. History includes family, transport and archaeology: children handle artefacts through play, notice differences and changes, and join focused carpet sessions. Questions are part of the learning, including how to seek an answer.
Jewish learning includes daily Tefillah, prayers, and a weekly Kabballat Shabbat assembly. Ivrit, Hebrew language learning, introduces words and phrases connected to other curriculum areas. Hebrew songs provide another way to practise. Parents join celebrations through children’s presentations for Shabbat and key Chaggim, the festivals.
In June 2022, Ofsted found that early-years adults used questions purposefully and checked children’s understanding effectively. That matters beyond the activity itself: teachers could identify mistaken ideas and respond to what children understood.
Nursery children were safe, happy, confident and settled in June 2022. That dated finding gives parents a useful view of children’s experience, alongside the evidence about adult interaction in the early years.
Parents are encouraged to contact the school whenever they have concerns about their child. This provides a direct route for raising worries rather than waiting for a scheduled conversation. Participation in festival presentations also gives families a specific connection with children’s learning and Jewish life.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning beyond nursery.
A consultation for September 2023 entry proposed limited nursery priority, conditional on meeting the school’s faith criteria. It was a proposal subject to adoption, so it should not be treated as an entitlement for a current applicant.
