At a Glance

Four classrooms, a garden and woodland learning give Pound Park its character. Children aged two to four attend this maintained nursery school in Charlton, run by the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The nursery provision is the school itself, with younger children integrated into its main learning spaces.

For two-year-olds referred through a Children’s Centre or the Family Information Service, there are 48 part-time places under Together for Twos. These provide 15 hours each week during term time. The shared environment matters: children can explore beyond a single age-group room, with activities distributed across the classrooms and garden.

The Nursery Day

Play shapes the curriculum. Staff plan indoor and outdoor activities each day around children’s interests, seasonal changes and significant experiences. Two- and three-year-olds move freely between the four classrooms and garden, so an interest can lead from indoor exploration to outdoor activity.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers learning to communicate, move confidently and manage feelings, alongside early reading, writing, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Here, those areas connect through practical experiences. Sand, mud and water support exploration; construction blocks invite children to test ideas; the Home-Corner supports imaginative play. Numbers and conversation are woven into activities rather than confined to separate lessons.

Woodwork gives that approach a concrete focus. Curriculum goals progress from exploring materials and using simple tools to planning designs, working at the woodwork table and adjusting mistakes. These are goals matched to each child’s development, rather than identical expectations for everyone. Core books, rhymes and songs provide familiar material for building vocabulary and joining in.

Forest School extends the outdoor day through a small woodland area on site and another space at Gilberts Pit. Three Forest School leaders work alongside parent volunteers. Activities include identifying trees and plants, wildlife searches and learning to handle tools and campfire cooking. Weekly Interactive Music Making sessions introduce instruments and practise attention and listening, while yoga uses stories, props and sensory experiences to engage children.

Care and Support

A key person takes responsibility for a child’s wellbeing, helps them settle and records their development. Home visits are offered before children start, giving families a chance to share information before nursery routines begin. Termly progress discussions connect observations at nursery with parents’ knowledge of their child; additional meetings can be arranged when needed.

For children starting with identified special educational needs, settling can extend gradually, with time built up slowly. Support may involve language groups or sensory circuits, and children at SEN Support 2 have a Personalised Learning Plan reviewed with their family each term. The SEND policy identifies additional input from the Oxleas Speech and Language Therapy Team and the Social Communication Worker Project. Ramps provide access to the building and garden, and there is an accessible toilet.

Food has practical detail too. The Summer 2026 menu included cheese and tomato pizza, vegetarian bolognaise and chicken korma. It listed fruit, bread, salad and water daily, with two vegetables accompanying main meals. The menu also provided for notified medical diets and allergies, making dietary information an important part of the new-starter Diet Sheet.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal primary admissions route and meet its deadline. Pound Park directs parents towards Royal Greenwich Primary Admissions for Reception.

Transition support is a separate matter. Receiving Reception teachers are invited to a Reception Teachers Tea to exchange information about children moving on. For children with SEND, arrangements can include contact with the receiving SENCo, transfer of records and a transition book. Visits to the next school are arranged where possible, sometimes at different times to help children become familiar with new routines.

Practical Information

Funded places follow a five-day, term-time pattern. The 15-hour option runs either 8:45am to 11:45am or 12:30pm to 3:30pm; the 30-hour day runs 9:30am to 3:30pm. Universal 15-hour entitlement begins in the term following a child’s third birthday. The 30-hour extended entitlement is for eligible working parents who meet the income criteria. The admissions policy also includes eligible two-year-olds under Together for Twos and working-parent entitlement.

Additional hours can be purchased. An earlier 8:45am start for full-time children requires a regular arrangement for the school year. Extended-day opening runs from 7:30am to 6pm in term time, excluding training days. The school publishes a sundries charge for all-day attendance. Its guidance for funded two-year-old places says payment for extras must not be a condition of taking up a 15-hour place, and alternative options must be offered. Ask the office about current charges and alternatives.

Visits can be booked through the school office, usually for around 10am on Tuesdays. Contact 020 8858 1791 or office@poundpark.greenwich.sch.uk. Logo clothing can be ordered through School Trends, and the new-starter pack includes an Extended Day Booking Form.
