Nursery at Avonmore Primary School

A playground of its own and a full school day give Avonmore’s nursery a distinct place within the primary school. There are 26 full-time places for children aged three and above. The nursery has a separate entrance and sits beside the Reception classroom: its own space, with the next stage nearby.
Ofsted rated the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 10 and 11 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play and activities directed by adults both shape the day. Staff build on children’s interests, join their play and ask questions that take an idea further. The emphasis is on extending what a child is already exploring, alongside planned teaching. Relationships matter too: adults help children learn how to play together and develop confidence.
Development Matters sits alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. For parents, this means learning extends beyond letters and numbers. Communication, movement and managing feelings sit alongside early literacy and mathematics, creative expression and finding out about the world. These are connected parts of a young child’s development, rather than a timetable made up solely of academic tasks.
The separate playground gives outdoor learning a physical place in the nursery’s provision. Indoors, the nursery classroom is next to Reception. In May 2023, children across early years showed enthusiasm and sustained involvement in their learning. That gives the play-based approach a useful measure: children were actively taking part.
Lunch is included for every nursery child, with a healthy snack during play times. The nursery place itself is also free for every child. For families, food is therefore part of the ordinary day rather than an additional lunch arrangement to organise.
The staffing structure includes a class teacher whose responsibilities combine nursery teaching and early years leadership. Parents can contact the SENCO through the school office, giving families a direct route for discussing additional needs.
Communication has a nursery-specific rhythm. The class teacher supplies a bulletin each half term covering learning topics, trips, assemblies and the weekly timetable. A weekly Avonmore Newsletter also reaches families by email. Together, these give parents both classroom detail and school dates, useful when a young child’s account of the day is brief.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Avonmore. The school allocates nursery places, while Hammersmith and Fulham Local Authority handles Reception admissions. Make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority process by its deadline.
The neighbouring classrooms are a feature of the nursery’s position within the school. Keep that physical connection separate from the admissions decision: choosing this nursery does not secure the next place.
The nursery offers a full-time, 30-hour model. The day starts at 8:35am and ends at 3:30pm, with an earlier finish of 2:15pm on Fridays. That shorter Friday needs its own collection plan.
Uniform includes a navy Avonmore cardigan or jumper, a white polo shirt and grey trousers, skirt or pinafore. Black shoes and an Avonmore book bag are also listed. This is a school-uniform routine from nursery age.
