Mud, bikes and a book corner give Normand Croft’s nursery its character: children learn through practical play, with a substantial outdoor area of their own. This is the nursery within Normand Croft Community School for Early Years and Primary Education on Bramber Road in West Kensington, with provision starting at age two.
The early years team brings teachers and practitioners together around learning through play. The school aims to help children become independent and confident, planning experiences around their interests and stage of development. That makes children’s choices part of the learning process.
Children have opportunities to choose activities themselves as well as join learning directed by adults. Staff watch and listen during play before deciding whether to join in, and use their observations to plan the next steps. The approach gives children room to explore while allowing adults to introduce a resource or activity that extends their thinking.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects everyday experiences with children’s development. Language, movement and managing feelings sit alongside early maths, literacy, creativity and understanding the world. Activities bring these areas together rather than treating each as a separate lesson: a practical game can involve conversation, sharing and solving a problem at the same time.
Indoors, children can paint, make collages, take part in pretend play or choose reading in the book corner. Outdoors, the classroom has cars and bikes alongside water, mud and sand. There is space for movement as well as exploration. These are concrete opportunities to practise handling materials, try ideas and play with other children.
Planning draws on Development Matters. Practitioners observe what children can manage independently, identify what to work on next and then plan activities accordingly. The emphasis is on the individual child’s next step.
Tapestry connects learning at nursery with life at home. Teachers and Early Years Educators record photographs and observations in each child’s online profile; access is restricted to staff and that child’s parents. Parents can contribute comments and observations themselves, so the conversation goes both ways.
Families can also join play sessions, take part in workshops and contribute through volunteering. Their knowledge of their child informs assessments and discussions about what to work on next.
For additional needs, the school uses teaching adapted to children’s needs and supports children with physical disabilities to access its spaces. The SENDCo can be contacted at senco@normandcroft.lbhf.sch.uk. Nursery lunchtime runs from 11.45am to 12.45pm, providing a fixed point in the day.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a place in the school’s Reception class. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
Nursery finishes at 3.15pm. Children do not wear uniform, and clothing should carry their name so misplaced items can be returned. These are useful details for planning collection and preparing everyday clothes for practical play.
Contact the school on 0207 385 6847 or email info@normandcroft.lbhf.sch.uk for enquiries. Visits can be arranged by telephone. If a child will be absent or collection will be late, families should ring the school; supervision more than ten minutes beyond the end of the day may incur a charge.
