At a Glance

An Early Years playground, a woodland area and time to follow a child's own interests give St Paul's nursery its character. This is the school's own nursery class within its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) unit in Hammersmith. Children can join after their third birthday. Morning sessions accommodate up to 26 children; remaining offers are made for the afternoon, also up to 26.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 26 and 27 November 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play and short teaching sessions alternate through the morning. Children choose activities across the indoor and outdoor spaces, while adults join their play, introduce tasks and respond to their interests. Small groups spend up to 20 minutes on storytelling, early maths or phonics. The balance gives children time to pursue an idea as well as focused attention from an adult.

The EYFS brings together learning about language, relationships, movement, reading, numbers, creativity and the world. Here, vocabulary receives explicit attention: adults extend conversations and introduce new words through books, play and teaching. Sustained Shared Thinking (SST) sits alongside extended play, making conversation part of how children explore ideas. The EYFS curriculum names GES Simply Letters and Sounds as its phonics programme, with group reading and discussion of books also part of the routine.

Outside, the Early Years playground and woodland area provide contact with changing weather and seasons. Movement breaks are planned too. In November 2024, children in early years chose their own rocket-building materials and explained their decisions, a concrete example of independence in action. Their learning about vocabulary and sounds was a strength, supported by knowledgeable adults.

Afternoons bring further activities and group teaching matched to children's development. Collective worship includes singing, stories, prayer and reflection, so the Church of England character has a place in the nursery day.

Care and Support

Parents can take part in stay and play on Thursdays and Fridays until 9:20am. This offers time together in the EYFS unit and a chance to see the activities children use. Learning Journey books are shared termly, alongside parents' evenings, giving families ways to follow their child's learning.

Lunch is also practice in looking after yourself. When morning nursery children leave at noon, children staying for lunch go with EYFS staff to the dining centre. Adults help with food choices, washing hands and handling cutlery. Care and independence meet in an everyday routine.

The staffing list includes a nursery teacher with NNEB training. Additional support in early years includes a nurture group and targeted help during play, with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and specialist outreach services among the team's external partners. Zones of Regulation is used from Nursery onwards to help children recognise feelings. The school's SEND process uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review, with plans revisited and shared with parents and staff.

Moving On to Reception

Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process, naming St Paul's on the Common Application Form provided by Hammersmith & Fulham. Main-school applications are coordinated by the local authority, and places follow the school's admission criteria.

For applications under the Church Attendance criterion, a supplementary form must also go to the school, signed and stamped by the family's clergy. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 9am to noon, afternoon nursery from 12:30pm to 3:30pm, and full-time attendance from 9am to 3:30pm. Full-time places are restricted to children whose parents qualify for the government's additional 15 funded hours each week and share their eligibility code with the school. This condition matters when choosing a pattern that fits family working hours.

Nursery applications use the school's form, with paper copies obtainable from the school. At the end of the afternoon, collection is from the classroom door. Enquiries can go to 020 8748 4951 or enquiries@stpaulsce.lbhf.sch.uk. School open mornings run on Wednesdays at 10am, with a 30-minute guided tour bookable online, by telephone or by email.
