Nursery at Wendell Park Primary School

Stories, conversation and Forest School give Wendell Park’s nursery its character. Jade and Topaz are the nursery classes within the primary school on Cobbold Road, with places offered between children’s third and fourth birthdays. The provision combines morning attendance with a full-time option: 26 morning places and 26 full-time places are advertised.
The nursery sits within the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage provision. Ofsted judged early years Good at the inspection of 29 and 30 November 2022; this was an early-years judgement within the school inspection. The EYFS area is accessible, a useful distinction for families considering the practical demands of the site.
Talking is woven into play. Adults build on children’s comments by adding vocabulary, while stories, poems and rhymes give them words to try in conversation and pretend play. This makes language development part of ordinary activity, rather than a separate exercise. A picture book goes home on Mondays and is exchanged the following Monday, linking classroom stories with reading together at home.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, brings together language, relationships and movement with early literacy, mathematics, creativity and learning about the world. Here, adult teaching alternates with time for children to choose and explore activities. Children can recreate familiar situations, tackle problems together and pursue their own ideas. Early-years children also have daily opportunities to experiment with art materials and make their own work.
Outdoor learning forms part of the approach, including weekly Forest School. Both Jade and Topaz participate, with wellington boots brought separately for changing into. Indoors and outdoors, the emphasis is on exploration alongside adult guidance. In November 2022, early-years learning included using story journeys to explore maps and counting to work out one more or one fewer. Those examples show how stories and practical number work connect with later learning.
Starting is gradual. For September 2026, new nursery children joined through staggered starts extending to 18 September. The nursery team includes teachers, early years educators and teaching assistants, giving families several staff roles involved in the children’s day.
Parents can contribute home experiences to Tapestry, the online learning journal used to record progress and achievements. Friday Stay and Play runs from 9am to 9:30am, providing time together in the nursery. Keep a labelled change of clothes on your child’s peg and send a named bottle containing water. Staff speak to parents if a child has not eaten all or most of their lunch, making lunch concerns part of direct communication.
Support for additional needs starts with the class teacher and SENDCo. Pupil Profiles are shared with parents and reviewed termly; support may involve individual work, small groups or adapted teaching. This gives families a recurring opportunity to discuss how provision matches their child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority under the listed admission criteria. Families must make a separate application to Hammersmith and Fulham, or their home borough, in January. Allocation follows the stated priorities for care status, exceptional needs, siblings and walking distance. Treat that application as a separate step in your plans.
Transition support and allocation are different matters. The school’s SEND arrangements provide for staff to share children’s needs, progress and support strategies when they change classes, helping the next team prepare for them.
Children should be in class by 8:50am. Morning-only collection is at noon from the Lefroy Road gate. Full-time nursery finishes at 3:20pm from Monday to Thursday and at 2:30pm on Fridays. At drop-off, escort your child across the playground to the nursery gate.
The morning model is 15 hours; full-time places are 30 hours. Families eligible for the latter submit their eligibility code with the nursery application. Those seeking full-time attendance without that eligibility can discuss paid top-up places with the office; contact the school for current charges. Nursery applications go directly to the school office, on 020 8743 1372 or admin@wendellpark.lbhf.sch.uk.
Places may be offered between a child’s third and fourth birthdays.
There are morning places for 15 hours and full-time places for 30 hours. Full-time attendance through paid top-up places can be discussed with the office if the family is not eligible for a 30-hour place.
Tapestry records learning and progress, and parents can add experiences from home. Stay and Play takes place on Fridays from 9am to 9:30am.
Send a named water bottle and keep labelled spare clothes on their peg. Bring wellington boots separately for Forest School and a book bag for Monday book exchanges.
