Nursery at Cavendish Primary School

An outside classroom used daily, rhymes to build listening skills and books within reach indoors and out give Cavendish's nursery its character. Ivy class has 26 places for children aged three to four at Cavendish Primary School in Chiswick. Families can choose mornings or a full day, with additional care before and after the nursery day.
Ofsted's November 2025 inspection judged the school's early years provision to be Strong standard. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Language is a clear strength: adults develop children's speech through conversations during play, helping them gain confidence in expressing themselves.
Play combines activities guided by adults with choices children make themselves. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together communication, movement and emotional development with early literacy, maths, creative expression and learning about the world. Activities are planned around children's interests and development, giving staff a basis for shaping planned play.
Outdoor learning is part of the daily routine. Nursery has its own outside classroom, and children can move between learning indoors and outdoors during parts of the day. Messy activities and outdoor play mean clothes can get wet. This is practical, active learning, with labelled spare clothing a sensible part of the bookbag routine.
Little Wandle Foundations for Phonics introduces listening and language through songs, rhymes and activities. Children share poems and stories, with books accessible in both learning environments. Wednesday is Library Day, while Monday brings the Bedtime Story Box: named routines that connect books at nursery with reading at home.
Maths also runs through ordinary activities. Children explore shapes, recognise numerals from one to five and practise spotting quantities up to three without counting each item. Number patterns in songs and stories link these ideas to familiar experiences. Children also begin mathematical mark-making, giving them opportunities to represent their number ideas.
Staff build their understanding of each child's interests and starting point, and adapt the curriculum for special educational needs or disabilities (SEND). In November 2025, early years support for children with SEND and other learning barriers was highly effective. For families, this makes individual needs part of learning plans, rather than an afterthought.
Communication includes informal conversations and arranged meetings about development across the year. Parents' observations also help shape planning. The Ivy class email, nursery@cavendish.hounslow.sch.uk, gives families a route to share photographs and experiences from home.
Milk, fruit and fresh water are provided daily. Afternoon attendance includes lunch; school meals are cooked on site, with parents choosing main dishes beforehand through ParentMail. Vegetarian and halal choices are identified, and the kitchen can accommodate most dietary needs. Tell the office about allergies or intolerances before meals are arranged.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application online through the London Borough of Hounslow, where different selection criteria apply. Treat that application as a separate task even if your child already attends Ivy class.
For the September 2026 Reception intake, the closing date was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed. The nursery's listening games, stories and early language work prepare children for their next stage of learning; this educational preparation does not secure admission.
The nursery starts between 8:45am and 8:55am, with full-day collection at 3:15pm. Morning collection. The admissions page gives an 11:45am finish, while the EYFS page gives noon. Confirm the collection time for your booked morning place before arranging your day.
Morning-only provision offers 15 hours, while eligible families can use 30 funded hours; paid places are also offered. Funding codes need reconfirmation every three months, with a renewed declaration returned to the office. Ask the school for current charges.
Get Up and Go Breakfast club runs from 7:45am to 8:45am; after-school wraparound runs from 3:15pm to 6pm during term time. Nursery children can attend, with a Cavendish staff member supporting them at breakfast club. Book wraparound through Arbor.
Drop-off and collection take place at the nursery outside classroom. Bring a school bookbag, label belongings and follow the compulsory uniform requirements. Late collection leads to aftercare and a charge. Contact office@cavendish.hounslow.sch.uk or 020 8994 6835 for enquiries; parent tours can be booked using the tour form or by telephone.
