Dough modelling and first steps with numbers give this nursery its character: practical learning with a clear purpose. Part of Strand-on-the-Green Infant and Nursery School on Thames Road in Chiswick, it welcomes children in September after they turn three. Its funded session options cover children aged three and four.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding following its inspection on 6 and 7 December 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. For parents, the useful detail is how children learn: purposeful play sits alongside activities guided by adults.
Children have opportunities to choose their own activities as well as join teaching led by staff. The early years foundation stage here includes building number knowledge, developing movement skills and learning to cooperate. These are foundations children can practise through concrete tasks.
In December 2022, nursery children worked on identifying and using numbers from one to five. Handling dough developed both smaller hand movements and larger physical skills, laying groundwork for later modelling with other materials. This gives play a learning purpose beyond simply keeping children occupied.
Across early years, children maintained their attention during activities they chose themselves and those adults organised. They also learnt kindness and how to collaborate productively. The combination matters: children practise making choices while learning how to take part alongside others.
Learning to work with other children is part of the care picture. The December 2022 early years findings describe children concentrating closely and developing considerate ways of working together. Social learning therefore accompanies the practical curriculum.
For parents following learning at home, the school provides dated Nursery Curriculum Letters. The Extended Nurture Club also includes a healthy snack for nursery children attending after school. Families seeking a SEND place are directed to Hounslow's SEN department, giving them a specific application route.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application to the borough where they permanently live, including when they want a school across a borough boundary. For September 2027 entry, the Reception application deadline is 15 January 2027. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery sessions.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.50pm to 3.50pm. The 15-hour offer provides either morning or afternoon places. For eligible families, the 30-hour pattern covers four and a half days, with the remaining morning or afternoon available to purchase. An eligibility code must be supplied before a 30-hour place can be offered, and places depend on capacity.
Additional paid sessions depend on space and are usually arranged and paid for before each term. Occasional extras can also be booked if available. Lunch runs from 11.45am to 12.50pm, while Extended Nurture Club continues from 3.50pm to 5.45pm. Contact the school for current charges.
Enquiries go to admissions@strandin.hounslow.sch.uk or 020 8994 7921. School tours are booked through the office, start at 9.15am and take about an hour. The school's uniform guidance asks families to label clothing and avoid jewellery; Stitch Design supplies branded items, with second-hand sales another option.
Children join in September following their third birthday. Contact the school office about availability.
