Nursery at Falkner House
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
Half days, playground time and music in the Big Room define Falkner House’s nursery offer. This mixed nursery serves children aged two to four at the girls’ Brechin Place site. Its classrooms occupy the lower ground floors of 17 Brechin Place, while the school office is next door at number 19.
Most children begin around their third birthday. New starters join the afternoon group; children staying for another year move to mornings in September. That progression matters for family routines: the session changes as children move through nursery.
Play and adult-led activities share the session. In November 2024, nursery activities were matched effectively to children’s development, with imaginative group play, independent book choices and conversation supporting learning. Role-play corners introduce occupations such as police work and veterinary care. Pretend shops give buying and selling a practical context.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides a guide to learning about language, movement, relationships and the world. Falkner House has an exemption from its learning and development requirements, but its welfare and safeguarding duties still apply. Read, Write, Inc introduces letter sounds. Termly themes include journeys, seasons and mini beasts, giving children subjects to explore across activities.
Specialist school staff teach PE and music; Chelsea Ballet School provides dance teaching. Twice-weekly music sessions in the Big Room explore singing, instruments and rhythm. Art materials include charcoal, clay and pastels, so making marks extends beyond pencils. Outdoors, the playground accommodates breaks and PE, with equipment such as hoops and tricycles brought out for some sessions. Nursery outings include museums and nature walks at Fulham Palace. These give classroom topics a setting beyond school.
A head of nursery leads the classroom team, and staffing includes a CACHE Level 3 childcare qualification. Everyday independence is part of the curriculum: children practise managing clothes, washing hands, sharing and tidying. At the middle of each session, they have fruit and water; drinking water remains accessible throughout. This is a snack arrangement to plan around when organising meals at home.
Parents receive a Friday email covering the following week, while nursery news explains recent and forthcoming topics. Appointments with nursery staff provide a route for discussing development. For additional needs, teachers work with parents and the SENCO, using Assess, Plan, Do, Review. Small-group teaching is the nursery norm; individual education plans are shared with parents and reviewed at least termly. External specialist support is generally arranged and funded by families, with school facilitation.
In November 2024, leadership and safeguarding standards were unmet because proprietors also held designated safeguarding lead roles, compromising independent oversight; the unmet requirements included EYFS safeguarding. At the July 2025 monitoring inspection, all standards examined were met, with separate safeguarding leads appointed and staff understanding early-years rules on medicines and recording devices.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee entry to either Falkner House school. The admissions policy gives nursery children the same assessment criteria as external applicants, so attendance confers no Reception priority. Families must register separately for main-school entry through the relevant boys’ or girls’ admissions form and take part in the January assessment process.
For girls, registration is accepted up to the first birthday; older applicants use the registration reserve-list enquiry route. Keep this separate from the nursery experience: familiar surroundings do not replace the main-school application or assessment.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Full days are unavailable. Nursery follows term dates that differ slightly from the main school’s, so use its own calendar when planning childcare.
For children aged three to five, the basic 15 funded hours per week are accepted, but funding does not cover the whole place. Additional charges cover integral activities, snacks and educational services. Ask the school for current charges. Withdrawal requires written notice for a full term, submitted by the first day of the final term, to avoid charges in lieu.
Perry Uniform supplies clothing, with second-hand items sold at school. Drop-off and collection normally use the nursery entrance at 17 Brechin Place. After 8.45am or 12.45pm, use 19 Brechin Place and accompany your child down to Nursery. Changes to the usual collector must be communicated to staff. Enquiries go to office@falknerhouse.co.uk or 020 7373 4501.
