French, English and Monday woodland exploration give Cambridge Gardens Nursery its character. Children can join from age two, with a choice of morning, afternoon or whole-day attendance. This is The Stewart Bilingual School’s nursery provision at 80 Cambridge Gardens, London W10 6HS, separate from the primary school’s Clarendon Road premises.
Native speakers lead activities in both languages. The nursery says it favours small classes and teaching adapted to each child’s pace, making individual development part of its intended approach rather than organising learning solely around age.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sits alongside the French Education Nationale programme. Learning combines play, conversation and activities led by adults: children have time to choose what they do, alongside group teaching and smaller-group work. Both languages are woven into the learning rather than confined to isolated language lessons.
Mornings start with free play during the 8:30 to 9:00 arrival period. Circle time follows, then a snack, activities and another opportunity to play. Outdoor play comes before lunch. Later, group learning and play return, followed by a snack and another outdoor period before departure at 16:00. The alternation between shared activities and free play gives the day a recognisable rhythm.
Monday brings Forest School in an enclosed woodland space nearby. Children investigate plants, trees and seasonal changes, listen to their surroundings and use natural materials in their exploration. Storytelling and mathematical ideas also feature outdoors. The nursery aims to develop independence through these experiences, with teamwork and solving problems forming part of the activity.
Specialist sessions give the week further variety: Wednesday includes dance, Thursday brings singing and Friday includes sport. These sit alongside the bilingual programme, adding movement and music to the classroom routine.
Lunch and rest have their own place in the day. A hot lunch is provided except on Wednesdays, when the ordinary session ends at noon. Meals are prepared at the Oxford Gardens provision and transported to the nursery; lunch is included in fees. Children attending the Wednesday club need a packed lunch instead.
Parents bring five pieces of fruit on Mondays for snacks, while milk and water are supplied. Families should discuss severe allergies and dietary requirements with the manager. Breakfast can also be brought from home for staff to serve.
After lunch, children can sleep or spend time with books and quiet games. Parents supply a sheet and blanket for naps. Children can attend before they are toilet trained, and families provide nappies, wipes and sun cream. This makes the provision an option for children still developing those everyday care skills.
Collection arrangements involve the child’s key carer. Only authorised collectors may take a child home; changes need written confirmation, and a new collector must be introduced to that carer. Parents also need to keep contact details up to date.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm Reception application and re-enrolment requirements, including deadlines, with the school before making plans for the next stage.
The school accepts registrations throughout the year where places remain. Offers require acceptance within ten days. Keep the Reception decision separate from the appeal of the nursery’s bilingual day.
Morning, afternoon and whole-day sessions operate across the working week, with Wednesday’s ordinary nursery session finishing at 12:00. After-school care can extend attendance until 18:30. The shorter Wednesday needs its own childcare planning, especially for families relying on a full working day.
Arrange a personal tour by emailing admin@stewartbilingualschool.com and giving your child’s date of birth. The nursery telephone number is 020 8960 1217. Contact the school for current charges. If collection needs to be delayed, telephone ahead: additional care depends on staffing and may not be possible.
