Nursery at Fairlawn Primary School

Preparation for the next classroom gives Fairlawn’s nursery its clearest character. The early-years curriculum connects children’s learning and development with their move into Reception. This is the school’s own nursery on Honor Oak Road, so families are choosing provision within a primary school rather than a separate childcare setting.
The useful distinction is between educational continuity and admission. Learning can be planned across those stages, but a nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Families should treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.
Planned learning is the strongest evidenced feature of the nursery day. At the June 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that early-years learning and development were organised carefully to prepare children for the next stage. The early-years approach also draws on research about how children learn, giving the curriculum a basis beyond a collection of activities.
For parents, the significance is the connection between what children learn now and what comes next. Nursery learning belongs to a sequence of development across the early years. That educational link matters in its own right; it should be considered separately from the question of obtaining a school place.
Safeguarding sits within Fairlawn’s school-wide arrangements. Recruitment involves checks before staff are appointed, followed by continuing scrutiny of their work with children. A whistleblowing procedure gives staff a route for raising concerns about colleagues, and the safeguarding policy is updated annually. These are concrete parts of the school’s arrangements for protecting children.
Parents can speak to the school about safeguarding questions. The headteacher and deputy head hold safeguarding lead responsibilities, giving families identified roles to approach rather than relying on an informal conversation alone.
Lunch is a practical consideration for nursery families. Nursery meals carry a charge, with payment through ParentPay; contact the school for current charges. Fairlawn prohibits nuts and foods containing them. Packed lunches must also exclude peanut butter sandwiches, chocolate bars, sweets and fizzy drinks, so families need to build those restrictions into lunch preparation.
Attending Fairlawn’s nursery does not guarantee admission to its Reception class. Parents must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate task even if your child is already attending nursery.
The curriculum connection serves a different purpose: it prepares children educationally for the move between stages. It is a learning benefit, not an assurance of admission.
