Language and concentration give Haseltine’s early years its character. In March 2023, children benefited from carefully organised learning and adults who developed their communication across activities. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Haseltine’s nursery accommodates 26 children in the morning and 26 in the afternoon, with 30-hour places included within those sessions. Children usually join in the autumn after turning three. Its entrance sits to the right of the main school entrance, giving families a specific nursery access point.
Two three-hour sessions shape the day: mornings run from 8.55am to 11.55am, and afternoons from 12.20pm to 3.20pm. These are distinct attendance options, so families can choose the part of the day that suits them when applying.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) learning described in March 2023 put conversation, attention and early reading into everyday activities. Adults helped children broaden their language throughout their learning, rather than treating communication as a separate task. Clear expectations helped children remain focused on what they were doing. For parents, the significant combination is purposeful activity and support to stay with it.
Reading support began as soon as children joined early years. The March 2023 findings described effective curriculum delivery across early years and a calm atmosphere that helped children achieve well. This gives the nursery’s learning a clear direction: building communication and engagement from the start.
Warm relationships supported settling. In March 2023, the calm early years atmosphere helped children adjust quickly to school life, while adults modelled how to behave and interact. That matters for children learning to spend a session away from their family.
The nursery team includes a teacher and learning support assistants. At school level, a SENDCO/Inclusion Leader provides a point of contact for additional needs; families can contact the SENCO through the SEND page. Parents can also select Nursery when subscribing to the school’s email news digest, helping them receive information relevant to their child’s group.
Separate application. Attending Haseltine’s nursery does not guarantee admission to its Reception, and nursery attendance is not among the listed Reception priorities. Those priorities concern children in public care, medical or social needs, siblings and distance. Families therefore need to plan a fresh application.
Apply through eAdmissions for Reception. The admissions page describes an early-January deadline and directs families to Lewisham for the applicable year’s date. It asks applicants to rank six school preferences. Keep this application separate from the nursery form and waiting list.
Request a nursery application form from the school office and return it there, indicating morning, afternoon or a 30-hour place if eligible. Applications enter a waiting list; proof of the child’s birth date and address is required before attendance begins.
The school uniform combines a white polo shirt with a green Haseltine cardigan or sweatshirt, bought through the school. Footwear is black or grey shoes or smart trainers. For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 020 8778 6536.
Usually in the autumn term following their third birthday. Spaces arising during the year are allocated from the waiting list.
The morning session is 8.55am to 11.55am. The afternoon session is 12.20pm to 3.20pm.
Yes. These places sit within the morning and afternoon provision, and the application form asks families to indicate this option if eligible.
No. Nursery attendance is not one of the listed Reception priorities and does not guarantee a place. A separate application through eAdmissions is required.
At the inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023, the school’s early years provision was graded Outstanding. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
