At a Glance

Sharing resources, taking turns and choosing healthy food are part of the early years picture at Rushey Green. Ofsted’s inspection on 22 and 23 November 2022 graded the school’s early years provision Good and described children cooperating successfully and being encouraged to make healthy food choices independently. Those are useful signs of children learning to manage everyday life together.

This is Rushey Green Primary School’s own nursery in Catford. Places are for children from three until the beginning of the academic year in which they turn five. A nursery teacher and nursery nurses appear in the staff structure, alongside an EYFS lead: the provision sits within the school’s early years team.

The Nursery Day

Morning, afternoon and full-day patterns give families a choice between a shorter session and a day spanning lunchtime. The nursery timetable runs Monday to Friday. That makes the choice of pattern an important part of matching nursery to family routines.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together communication, physical development, social and emotional development, literacy and mathematics. For parents, that means looking beyond early reading and numbers to how a child talks, moves and gets along with others. Rushey Green’s early years physical education includes balancing, throwing, jumping and running through its Moving Matters approach. These are the movement skills children build on as they grow.

Jigsaw RE introduces early years children to belonging, stories and places that matter to people. It gives children starting points for understanding different beliefs and experiences. Cooperation also has a practical place in learning: the November 2022 early years findings describe children sharing equipment and waiting for their turn.

Care and Support

Food arrangements depend on the placement. For families using the nursery’s paid additional-hours option, the charge includes a school lunch. The admission paperwork collects information about allergies, medical conditions and dietary needs, giving families a formal way to explain care requirements before their child starts.

For additional needs, the first conversation is with the class teacher, with referral to the SENCO where appropriate. The school’s support cycle assesses needs, agrees a plan, puts support into practice and reviews its effect with parents. SEND Surgery appointments provide another route to discuss concerns. This makes family input part of deciding support rather than a conversation reserved for difficulties later.

Settling can be adapted for a child already known to have SEND. The SENCO gathers information from the previous setting, and a tailored transition plan may be used where needed. Safeguarding concerns can be raised through the school office with the designated safeguarding team.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority using eAdmissions. For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle is now past.

Preparation for the next classroom is a separate matter from allocation. For vulnerable children and children with SEND, the transition policy includes photo books showing new staff and rooms, visits to the next room and additional staff meetings. Familiarising a child with those people and spaces can make the change more manageable.

Practical Information

Funded placements cover either 15 or 30 hours each week. The admission pack places the universal 15-hour entitlement in the term following a child’s third birthday; the additional funded hours depend on eligibility and providing the government code. Families without that entitlement can apply for a paid additional 15 hours, subject to limited places. Ask the school for current charges.

Session times. The school-day timetable gives mornings as 9am to 12.10pm, afternoons as 1pm to 3.15pm and full days as 9am to 3.15pm. The admissions page gives different timings, so confirm the booked pattern before arranging collection.

Uniform applies to nursery children: a green logo sweatshirt or cardigan, white collared top, grey bottoms and black shoes are among the specified items. Nursery enquiries go to admin@rusheygreen.lewisham.sch.uk.

Superkids provides separately booked breakfast and after-school care for nursery children. Its school hall and pitch support activities, with a dedicated early years space. Contact admin@superkidsclub.co.uk for bookings and current charges.
