Familiar routines give nursery children at St George's a clear starting point: they settle quickly and get on with learning. This is the school's own nursery in Forest Hill, on Perry Vale. Provision for two-year-olds began in September 2026, extending the nursery's offer to younger children.
The May 2026 Ofsted judgement for the school's early years was Strong standard. That judgement covers early years across the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. Its practical emphasis is on purposeful learning, close relationships and growing independence.
Routine gives the day its shape. From Nursery Year, children learn the familiar patterns that help them settle into activities quickly. Across early years, carefully planned activities encourage children to investigate, while established routines help them do more for themselves. For parents, the combination matters: children have a predictable framework alongside opportunities to explore.
Language is a substantial part of that learning. Adults introduce more demanding vocabulary and use conversation to take children's ideas further. Teaching connects something children already understand with a new idea, rather than treating each activity as an isolated task. This gives practical play a clear learning purpose.
One early-years example involves miniature animals trapped in ice. Children use words they already know while exploring what makes the ice melt. The activity joins talk with investigation: a small, tangible problem becomes a reason to ask questions and think about change.
Early mathematics also gives children opportunities to practise working with numbers and the language used to describe them. These experiences sit within a carefully organised early-years curriculum, with learning arranged to build children's knowledge and skills over time.
Relationships help children feel ready to learn. In May 2026, early-years staff's caring interactions helped children become comfortable, sustain their attention and engage eagerly with activities. Settling is supported by both the adults children know and the routines they learn.
Contact with families also has a practical purpose. Early-years leaders use close collaboration with families to understand each child quickly and arrange support promptly when needed. That makes family knowledge part of the starting point for support, rather than leaving staff to discover a child's needs through classroom activities alone.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place at St George's. Families must make a separate application through Lewisham Local Authority, using www.eadmissions.org.uk, by 15 January. Treat that application as a distinct step: choosing the nursery does not replace it.
Nursery places cover either 15 or 30 funded hours each week, with eligibility conditions applying to the 30-hour option. The 15-hour pattern comprises three hours a day. A limited number of full-time places operate Monday to Friday, so the booking pattern matters when matching nursery attendance to family routines.
For nursery enquiries, telephone 020 8699 5127. Enquiries can also go to admin@stgeorges.lewisham.sch.uk. The school office is open to parents from 8.30am to 4.30pm, giving families a defined window for contact.
