Rhymes, stories and conversations about shapes gave Turnham Nursery a clear early learning character at the October 2022 inspection. This is Turnham Academy’s on-site nursery in Brockley, with children able to begin in September following their third birthday. Both part-time and full-time places are offered.
Early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection of 11 and 12 October 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Language and early reading provide the clearest picture of learning here. In October 2022, nursery children explored shape vocabulary and discussed a square’s sides. This connects mathematical ideas with speaking: children practise explaining what they notice, as well as recognising a shape.
At the October 2022 inspection, stories and rhymes introduced nursery children to letter sounds. Early years library labs sessions encouraged enjoyment of books. These are approachable starting points for young children, bringing listening, language and early reading together.
The nursery belongs to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the school’s early learning phase. Its themes include Marvellous Me and Family Matters, followed by Autumn Antics and To Market, To Market. Later themes include Winter Wonders, Healthy Me! and Roots and Shoots. The sequence moves between children’s own lives, seasonal changes and the wider world.
Computing starts simply. Nursery learning includes following instructions, exploring the idea that toys have moving parts and understanding that computers can provide information. The emphasis is on introductory ideas children can explore with adult support.
A nursery teacher forms part of the teaching team, alongside an EYFS lead. At school level, the SEND coordinator also holds assistant headteacher and designated safeguarding lead responsibilities. This gives families a defined leadership role for questions about additional needs and safeguarding.
Pastoral oversight sits with the SEND coordinator and Pastoral Lead. Weekly leadership discussions consider support needs, while the Pastoral Lead meets parents about concerns affecting children at school or at home. Families therefore have a route for discussing difficulties beyond classroom learning.
School dinners are offered for full-day nursery sessions and carry an additional charge. Ask the school for current charges when arranging a place.
Attending Turnham Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority in the normal admissions round. Children with an Education, Health and Care plan follow separate statutory procedures.
For September 2027 entry, the application deadline is on or about 15 January 2027. Lewisham residents can use the council’s application route or eAdmissions; residents of another borough apply through their own borough.
There is a specific, conditional nursery priority for 2027–2028 entry. Nursery children who qualify for Early Years Pupil Premium at the application deadline fall within Category 4, below the looked-after, medical-need and sibling categories. Within Category 4, nearer homes receive higher priority. Parents must also submit the Category 4 form by the application deadline. Nursery attendance alone does not confer this priority, and eligible children still need a Reception application.
The nursery offers Full Day (30 Hours), Morning and Afternoon sessions. Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am. Families can choose between a shorter session and a day spanning lunchtime, but should confirm afternoon start and collection times, and full-day collection times, with the office before arranging childcare around them.
Full-time places can use the 30 Free Hours Childcare Allocation where families meet the current eligibility criteria. Unfunded additional sessions are charged separately, as are school dinners for full-day attendance. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery applications go directly to the academy, using a form collected from and returned to the main office. For enquiries or a tour, call 0207 639 0440 or email office@turnhamacademy.org.
Collection arrangements need planning too. Telephone the office if the usual collection changes. A collector under eighteen requires prior agreement with the headteacher.
