Phonics, songs and time for children to direct their own learning give Dersingham’s nursery sessions a distinct shape. This is the school’s own nursery in Manor Park, with children usually starting around 3½ years old when a place becomes available. It forms part of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), where learning takes place outdoors as well as inside.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 26 and 27 November 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection. The leadership structure includes an assistant headteacher responsible for EYFS, giving this stage an identified place within the school’s management.
Both sessions begin with Sharp Start, followed by calendar activities and singing. Phonics comes next, with thematic learning and time for children to pursue their own activities making up a substantial part of the session. Maths, a snack break, collective worship and stories or songs also have their own slots. For parents, the pattern is clear: direct teaching sits alongside opportunities for children to make choices.
The EYFS curriculum starts with movement, communication and children’s social and emotional development. It also brings in maths, literacy, creative expression and learning about the world. In everyday terms, children are learning to talk, manage relationships and explore ideas as well as beginning work with numbers and reading. The named Bold Beginnings approach emphasises direct teaching of foundational skills, while the nursery timetable retains child-led learning.
Hands-on experiences extend across indoor and outdoor learning. Familiar things become material for discussion: early years children grow plants, consider seasonal changes and use family photographs to think about the past. Adults use objects, pictures and stories to prompt conversation. Spanish begins through songs and rhymes, adding another language to the early years experience. Every classroom has a book corner, placing books within the learning space rather than reserving them for story time alone.
In November 2024, children adjusted quickly to early years and learned to share, wait their turn and cooperate. Those social habits matter in a group setting: learning includes how to listen to adults and work alongside other children. Before a nursery start, families have a meeting with the Early Years Leaders to register their child.
Seesaw connects early years staff with parents and carers, helping home experiences inform learning. Snacks feature in both nursery sessions. For personal care, the admissions process includes a consent form allowing staff to help a child change after an accident. Medical Tracker provides email notifications about first aid and medication, giving families a direct communication route for these incidents.
The school’s SEND arrangements include adapted classroom learning and support individually, in pairs or in small groups. A speech and language therapist contributes specialist support. Parents can contact the SENDCO through the office or parentcomm@dersingham.newham.sch.uk to discuss their child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority; Newham residents apply through the London Borough of Newham.
For the September 2026 intake, the closing date was 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. Meetings for parents take place in the term before their child starts Reception, providing a chance to prepare for the change separately from the application process.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30 to 11:30, while the afternoon timetable spans 12:30 to 15:30. These are the session boundaries families need to fit around work and collection.
To begin an enquiry, complete the nursery interest form. It records interest rather than making a formal application; the admissions team emails an application pack once a place becomes available and the child is old enough to start. Admission enquiries can also go to admissions.attendance@dersingham.newham.sch.uk.
