Nursery at Drew Primary School

Outdoor play, early phonics and plenty of talk give Drew’s nursery its character. Forest is the nursery class within Drew Primary School in Silvertown, with entry after a child’s third birthday, subject to a place being available. It is a school nursery: children begin their learning within the school’s early years provision.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 25 and 26 January 2023. The nursery-specific detail gives that judgement substance: children explored locations outdoors, while early years teaching helped them develop language, recognise shapes and count accurately to 10.
Learning starts with words, sounds and practical ideas. In January 2023, communication and language teaching in early years was effective, and phonics began in Nursery. For parents, this means early reading sits alongside learning to describe things and understand numbers, rather than waiting until children move into school full time.
Talk 4 Writing is used across EYFS, the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children rehearse language aloud, use actions and drama, and work with text maps. These activities give them ways to practise a story’s language before developing their own ideas. The outdoor play space also has a learning purpose: nursery children used it to explore locations in January 2023, connecting a concept with the space around them.
Physical activity has a place in both session patterns. Morning-session PE takes place on Thursdays; afternoon-session PE is on Fridays. Children wear their PE clothes to school on those days, making the routine straightforward for families.
The January 2023 inspection also identified a curriculum concern across some school subjects: the knowledge to teach, and its order, needed greater precision. That was a school curriculum improvement action, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Before an offer of a nursery place, families attend an admissions interview and meet the nursery team. This gives parents an opportunity to meet staff before their child starts. Forest has a class teacher within the EYFS team.
Tapestry records children’s EYFS learning digitally and can be accessed by phone, tablet or computer. Arbor handles school communications about meetings and events. Together, they give families routes to follow learning and keep track of school arrangements.
For additional needs, parents can contact the SENCo. The school’s Family Liaison Officer also supports parents with behaviour, boundaries and routines; appointments are arranged through the office. These are useful contacts for discussing needs that span home and school.
Food rules require attention. The school encourages balanced packed lunches, including fruit or vegetables, dairy and a starchy food. Nuts are prohibited because some children have severe allergies; sweets, crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks are also excluded.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Newham’s Pupil Services, using the normal admissions process. Nursery children do not transfer automatically, and the main school’s admission criteria apply.
For September 2026 entry, the online application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Treat the nursery choice and the later Reception application as separate decisions, rather than assuming that joining Forest settles both.
Morning and afternoon nursery sessions operate, with the afternoon session ending at 3:30pm. EYFS collection uses the Nursery Gate entrance, giving families a specific collection point.
Parents can register interest with the School Office. Entry requires children to be toilet trained and no longer wearing nappies. This is a practical condition to consider before applying.
School uniform colours are grey, white and navy. Clothing should be labelled with the child’s name so lost items can be returned. For enquiries, email info@drew.lihtrust.uk or call 0207 476 1727; office hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.
Children can be offered a place after their third birthday, if space is available. They must be toilet trained and out of nappies.
No. A separate application through Newham’s Pupil Services is required, and nursery children do not move into Reception automatically.
The afternoon session finishes at 3:30pm. EYFS children are collected through the Nursery Gate entrance.
Morning-session children have PE on Thursdays, and afternoon-session children on Fridays. They should wear their PE kit to school that day.
