Cherry blossom, collage and counting give Keir Hardie’s nursery its character: creative exploration alongside early language and number work. Ladybird and Dragonfly are the named nursery groups within Keir Hardie Primary School in Canning Town. In January 2026, the nursery roll stood at 46 children. That is an attendance figure, rather than a measure of capacity.
Ofsted rated the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 6 and 7 March 2024. This judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery learning environment was calm and welcoming, giving young children a settled context for their first experiences of school.
Creativity has a concrete place in the learning. In March 2024, children explored spring through cherry blossom, experimenting with colour and making collages. This connects observation with making: children have something real to look at and a way to express what they notice.
The early years curriculum also gives substantial attention to language and numbers. Children received help with counting to 20, while adults regularly shared rhymes and stories. These are useful foundations for understanding quantity, listening to language and becoming familiar with books. The early years foundation stage here brings creative activity together with those early communication and mathematical skills.
Ladybird and Dragonfly have a nursery teacher, and the nursery team includes teaching assistant support. One support role also includes gardening, sustainability and the Eco Team. That adds an environmental strand to the team’s responsibilities, though it should not be read as a timetable of nursery activities.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school’s inclusion arrangements include interventions, resources and collaboration with specialist agencies. Support is organised around barriers to participation and learning, making a child’s particular needs the starting point for discussion.
Parents are encouraged to raise learning concerns with their child’s class teacher. This gives families a direct route into that conversation. Physical care facilities across the school include hygiene rooms on the first and ground floors; these are school facilities, rather than identified nursery rooms.
Keir Hardie also participates in Operation Encompass as part of its safeguarding work. Its safeguarding principles address children’s emotional and social needs alongside education, a relevant emphasis for families considering the move into nursery.
Reception requires a separate application. Attending Keir Hardie’s nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception year. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the later Reception application as separate decisions.
