Nursery at Rebecca Cheetham Nursery and Children's Centre

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Book choices, outdoor exploration and practical responsibility give Rebecca Cheetham its character. This maintained nursery school shares its site with a children’s centre in Stratford, with nursery provision for children aged two, three and four. Families can choose government-funded places or paid extended days, bringing education and childcare together.

The daily emphasis is on children becoming capable participants. They help with recycling, gather eggs from the chickens and care for the school tortoises. These are practical opportunities to take responsibility, alongside play and learning.

The Nursery Day

Learning Aspirations is the nursery’s own curriculum, developed using Development Matters and Birth to Five Matters. It works within the Early Years Foundation Stage: children develop language, movement and social skills alongside early reading, mathematics, creative work and understanding their surroundings. Adult-planned activities sit alongside children’s own choices, giving them both guidance and room to pursue an interest.

At the March 2025 inspection, Ofsted identified early reading as a strength and literacy, communication and language as a key priority. Children choose between books by voting as they register in the morning; stories, singing and rhymes bring repeated opportunities to hear and use language. Listening to sounds and exploring letters introduces the foundations for later phonics. Morning counting also makes number work part of the routine, including understanding how a quantity changes when something is added or removed.

Outdoor climbing and balancing equipment gives children physical challenges. In the woodwork area, using nails, hammers and drills involves concentration and following safety directions. Visits extend learning beyond the nursery, with destinations including the seaside and local places of worship. Practical activity carries real weight here.

Care and Support

The 2020-2021 handbook describes an individual settling process: each child has a key person, a home visit precedes starting, and parents stay until their child can cope comfortably with separation. That gives families a familiar adult to work with rather than a fixed timetable for saying goodbye.

The same handbook describes Evidence Me for sharing photographs and achievements, alongside a Special Book containing observations and children’s work. A settling meeting follows the first six weeks, with later key-person meetings twice yearly. Its meal arrangements include food cooked at the nursery, vegetarian choices and halal meat; lunch carries a charge for children attending over lunchtime. The nursery also provides an allergen checker covering breakfast, snacks and tea.

In March 2025, children with SEND received support shaped around their individual next steps, with needs recognised promptly and staff working with families. Children settled successfully, including the youngest children, and safeguarding arrangements were effective. For SEND discussions, parents can arrange an appointment through the administration team.

Moving On to Reception

Attending nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery and securing a primary-school place as separate decisions.

Preparation for that move includes sharing information about learning. The handbook describes transferring children’s assessments to their primary school, helping the receiving team understand their development. This supports continuity of care and teaching; it does not establish an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45 to 11:45, afternoons from 12:45 to 15:45, and extended days from 8:00 to 17:50. Collection needs to be punctual: late collection can incur a charge. The nursery offers funded provision for two-year-olds and for children aged three and four, including a 30-hour option, alongside flexible paid extended-day places. Eligibility applies to the 30-hour provision.

Contact the nursery to arrange a visit or discuss available places, using info@rebeccacheetham.newham.sch.uk or 020 8534 3136. Refer to the school for current charges. The handbook recommends clothes suitable for messy activity, rubber-soled shoes, labelled belongings and spare clothing. It also requires advance notice when a different adult will collect, with a password procedure for last-minute changes.
