Nursery at Roman Road Primary School

Small-group learning and early number work give Roman Road’s nursery a clear educational character. The school has a 52-place nursery in East Ham, within Roman Road Primary School. For parents, the focus is on an introduction to learning alongside other children, with expectations for concentration and cooperation beginning in the early years.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 11 and 12 July 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery-specific finding was striking: children began learning calm, orderly behaviour from Nursery onwards. This gives families a concrete indication of the expectations shaping the nursery day.
Number learning has substance here. In July 2023, early years children were learning to distinguish odd numbers from even ones and to understand halving. These are specific examples of the mathematical ideas children encounter, giving parents a clearer picture than a broad promise of preparation for school.
The early years foundation stage, or EYFS, is the curriculum framework named in the school’s policy collection. The inspection evidence puts some detail behind that label: early years children practised concentrating on tasks and working together in small groups. Learning therefore includes how to participate with others as well as developing knowledge.
There is an important qualification to the educational picture. In July 2023, ambitious early years learning was not reliably extended in younger classes in a few subjects. Earlier knowledge needed more reinforcement before children tackled harder ideas. For families considering a longer stay at Roman Road, the continuity of learning deserves attention alongside the early years judgement.
The school’s policy collection includes home visits, intimate care, nappy and potty training, and support for medical conditions. These are relevant parts of nursery life: personal care and health needs sit alongside learning, rather than being separate concerns for families.
For SEND enquiries, the contact route is the school’s SENCo through the main telephone number. Parents can therefore direct questions about additional needs to a defined role. A nursery and Reception induction presentation is also available for families to consult.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; the school’s admissions page directs them to an online application link. Treat that application as a distinct step, even when a child already attends the nursery.
The induction material covers both nursery and Reception. It provides information for families, but should not be read as an admissions advantage.
The nursery’s first-day notice gives a morning session of 8:25 to 11:25 and an afternoon session of 12:10 to 15:10. Those times are useful for understanding the two session patterns described in that notice.
Families seeking a nursery place partway through a term are directed to approach the school directly. General enquiries go through the school office on 020 7476 1602 or info@romanroad.newham.sch.uk. The address is Roman Road, East Ham, London E6 3SQ.
