Nursery at St Michael's Catholic Primary School

A three-hour morning and learning that reaches beyond the classroom give St Michael's nursery its shape. This is the nursery attached to St Michael's Catholic Primary School on Howard Road in East Ham, within a Catholic school community serving the parish and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Faith matters to its identity. The school aims to help children develop their faith and self-esteem alongside consideration for other people. For families, that makes the Catholic character an important part of the choice.
Sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am. That gives the nursery a compact morning timetable, with an early collection to build into family routines.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent terms, this brings children's learning, development, health and safety into one framework, with preparation for school as part of its purpose. Alongside it, the school uses Come and See for its Catholic religious education. The school aims to encourage independence and connect learning with direct experiences, giving children reasons to explore ideas beyond an explanation from an adult.
Two nursery outings show what that can mean. In October 2024, children visited a fire station during their People Who Help Us topic, sitting in fire trucks and watching a demonstration of the hose. Parent volunteers accompanied them. The visit connected the topic with real equipment and the work of emergency services.
In May 2025, a trip to the Discover Story Centre in Stratford took nursery children through a circus tent and woods into the Monster Funfair storytelling experience. Here, a story became a place to explore. These are specific examples of learning beyond the classroom, rather than a promise of a regular trip schedule.
The nursery team includes a teacher and a teaching assistant. This gives families two distinct classroom roles to recognise when building relationships with the adults caring for their child.
For children with special educational needs, the school's special educational needs co-ordinator works with individuals and groups. That provides a school-level support role alongside the nursery team. The school also aims to work closely with parents, treating the relationship between family, school and parish as part of children's development.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. Treat the two applications as separate tasks.
For September 2024 entry, applications went through the family's home local authority: Newham residents applied through Newham, while families elsewhere applied through their own borough. The closing date for that cycle was 15 January 2024. These are past-cycle arrangements, not an upcoming deadline.
For that same cycle, consideration under the faith-based priority groups required a Supplementary Information Form alongside the application. The supplementary form did not replace the Reception application, so completing it alone was insufficient.
Morning collection. The nursery session ends at 11.45am. Families need a collection arrangement that fits that time.
Nursery applications can be requested from the school office once a child is 2 years old or over; this is the age for obtaining the form, not a stated starting age. Return the completed form to school with the requested supporting documents.
Visits are welcomed by the school, including from prospective parents. For an enquiry, call 020 8472 3964 or email info@st-michaels.olog.org.uk.
