Nursery at Tollgate Primary School

Letter sounds and live theatre give Tollgate’s nursery two distinct starting points: the beginnings of reading and an annual encounter with professional performance. This is the nursery within Tollgate Primary School on Barclay Road in Plaistow, with separate morning and afternoon placements.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 7 and 8 December 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the most useful detail is the emphasis on planned learning across the early years, alongside reading that begins in Nursery itself.
Each session occupies a defined part of the day. Morning children attend from 8:30am to 11:30am, while the afternoon group attends from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. The placement model is morning only or afternoon only, giving families a clear attendance pattern around which to organise the rest of their day.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) programme develops children’s knowledge and skills across its areas of learning. In December 2022, early years learning was carefully ordered, with clear decisions about what children would learn and when. The practical implication is a programme with a sequence, rather than activities treated as isolated experiences.
Reading begins with recognising letter sounds. This gives nursery children an initial connection between written letters and spoken language. Annual pantomime trips add another kind of experience: children encounter professional theatre beyond their usual session. Reading foundations and theatre visits are concrete features of the nursery’s learning offer.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), Tollgate’s school-wide approach is to adapt teaching to developmental needs. Support in mainstream classrooms can be individual, in pairs or in small groups. These arrangements allow teaching to be shaped around the child rather than assuming everyone needs the same task or level of help.
A part-time speech and language therapist works at the school, and the onsite Community Hub provides training and social support for families of children with SEND. The Hub is a physical point of support for parents as well as a service connected to their children’s education. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a promise that every nursery child receives a particular intervention.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Tollgate has adopted Newham’s determined arrangements, and the application route includes the Pan London e-admissions portal.
For September 2026 entry, the closing date was 15 January 2026. That admissions cycle is past. Keep the nursery placement and the later Reception application as separate decisions: accepting one does not secure the other.
Names can be added to the nursery waiting list from a child’s second birthday. Families register at the Family Centre, bringing their most recent Council Tax bill, or, if unavailable, their tenancy agreement or rent book, together with a utility bill and the child’s birth certificate or passport. This makes the initial enquiry an in-person step with identity and address documents to prepare.
A nursery place is not guaranteed. Tollgate aims to offer children at least three terms before school entry, so families should treat that as an aim rather than an assured length of attendance.
The morning session runs from 8:30am to 11:30am. The afternoon session runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, with morning-only or afternoon-only placements.
