Nursery at Oakdale Infants' School

Three-hour sessions give Oakdale's nursery a clear rhythm: a morning or an afternoon within the infant school on Woodville Road, South Woodford. This is the school's own nursery provision, so families are choosing an introduction to school life as well as a session of early learning.
In September 2023, Ofsted found that children in early years made a positive start and became comfortable with school routines. That finding concerns the early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.45pm to 3.45pm. Each has short windows for dropping off and collecting children, giving families some flexibility around the session boundaries.
At the September 2023 inspection, children in early years showed enthusiasm and sustained involvement across their learning, with adults interacting positively and supporting their development. The emphasis is on participation across different areas of early learning.
The Oakdale Charter gives behaviour a named framework that applies from Nursery onwards. Its values include resourcefulness and resilience, alongside reflection, responsibility and respect. After an incident, children have an opportunity to think about their behaviour with an adult. For a young child, that means expectations are accompanied by a conversation about what happened.
Parents have a defined role when additional support is needed. The class teacher is the first contact for concerns, and the SENDCo, also called the Inclusion Lead, can be reached through the school office. Support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning action, putting it into practice and reviewing progress.
A Pupil Passport records individual targets for children with SEND, with reviews each term. Parents take part in planning and reviewing support, so the process gives families repeated opportunities to discuss whether an adjustment is helping. Speech and language therapy and the Early Years Advisory and Support Service are among the services the school works with.
The nursery contains a disabled toilet accessed through a secure door. Families whose children need medication must take it to the office and complete an authorisation form; a care plan may also be drawn up with parents and the school nurse. The school prohibits nuts, including foods such as peanut butter and pesto.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route, administered by the London Borough of Redbridge. Choosing the nursery and applying for school are distinct decisions; keep the Reception application as a separate task in your family calendar.
Continuity beyond early years needs attention. In September 2023, Ofsted found that Year 1 learning did not always extend children's existing early-years knowledge. The school was asked to strengthen that progression across every early-years learning area.
For the morning session, drop-off is between 8.45am and 8.55am, with collection between 11.35am and 11.45am. Afternoon drop-off runs from 12.45pm to 12.55pm, followed by collection between 3.35pm and 3.45pm. Complete the collection form when another adult will collect your child, and contact the office if arrangements change.
School Streets restrictions operate during term time from 8.15am to 9.10am and 2.35pm to 3.40pm in the designated area. These overlap nursery journeys, so allow for the restrictions when planning travel. For nursery enquiries, contact the school on 02089897895 or Admin@oakdaleinfantschool.co.uk.
