Outdoor exploration gives Goose Green's nursery its character. Play takes place inside and outside, with space for children to move about and pursue their interests. This is the school's own nursery on Tintagel Crescent in East Dulwich, welcoming children from the September following their third birthday until they start Reception.
Exploring and investigating shape the learning here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework, with outdoor learning given a central role. In practical terms, children learn through play and finding things out about their surroundings. Indoor and outdoor spaces allow movement and activities led by children's interests, so learning is not confined to sitting inside.
Listening also has a clear purpose. In June 2025, Ofsted identified nursery staff's work on helping children notice surrounding sounds as preparation for later phonics learning. It is a specific example of how an apparently simple activity supports the next stage: paying attention to sounds comes before learning to read them.
Early years staffing includes teachers, teaching assistants and a higher level teaching assistant with an early years special educational needs role. That gives families a specific support role to discuss when considering their child's needs. Before a placement is confirmed, parents and their child meet the headteachers, with the SENCO involved where applicable. This provides an opportunity to discuss support before the child starts.
Lunch choices include hot dishes alongside salad and fruit. School meals follow a three-week rotation, are halal and cater for dietary needs and preferences; food is made on site wherever possible, using seasonal British ingredients. Families choosing a packed lunch must notify the office at the beginning of each term. Labelled lunch boxes and plastic drinks containers are required, while sweets and fizzy drinks are excluded. The school is nut free, a relevant practical rule when packing food.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application to Southwark Council through eAdmissions, by January before the September intake. Treat that application as a separate task even while your child attends nursery.
Staff can help families with the Reception application. That assistance is useful, but it does not change the requirement to apply again or secure the outcome.
The core 30-hour offer runs Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 3.15pm. It provides 32.5 hours each week, with no top-up charge for the extra time, aligning collection and drop-off with the school day.
For the 15-hour offer, families use one of two patterns: Monday and Tuesday full days plus Wednesday morning, 8.45am to 11.30am; or Wednesday afternoon, 12.30pm to 3.15pm, plus Thursday and Friday full days. Each provides 15 hours 45 minutes, with no charge for the additional time. Parents eligible for 15 hours may pay to extend to 30 hours or three whole days, subject to places being available. Contact the office for current top-up charges.
