Shop play, counting coins and choosing a class reward give Seaton House's early years provision a practical character: children practise making decisions as well as learning numbers. The nursery admits boys and girls and forms part of the independent school in Sutton, Surrey.
In March 2025, the early years provision included two nursery classes. In July 2024, early years children made the short journey on foot to the main school with close adult supervision. In July 2024, managing movement between sites was part of the early years care arrangements.
ISI's inspection of 2 to 4 July 2024 found that early years children were supported in developing social interaction, communication and number confidence through planned activities and selected resources. These findings concern the early years provision collectively, rather than a separate nursery assessment.
Number learning has a practical purpose. Children count items during play, work forward from a starting number and consider how many extra objects would reach a target. Playing shops introduces coins alongside pretend transactions. These examples connect mathematical ideas with something children can handle and do.
Physical activity also has a place in the early years curriculum, with tasks developing both small hand movements and larger body movements. Yoga and mindfulness introduce another pace. In July 2024, children understood that a busy day could include a pause and some personal space. Activity and quiet moments both had a purpose.
Small responsibilities extend the learning beyond adult-led tasks. Early years children take turns putting their learning spaces in order, while voting for a reward toy gives them experience of a collective decision. Adults explain that a child's choice still counts even when another option wins. This makes participation tangible.
Parents could follow their children's early years learning through an online system in July 2024. That offers a connection between classroom activity and conversations at home. On journeys between sites, children were closely supervised and understood when they needed to stop talking while crossing the road.
Safeguarding needs a clear, dated account. In July 2024, restrictions on devices with cameras were being followed in early years, but school-wide recruitment checks were sometimes late, and delayed DBS clearance did not always have an accompanying risk assessment. Weak oversight meant that safeguarding and leadership requirements were unmet.
The ISI progress monitoring inspection on 6 March 2025 confirmed compliance with every relevant standard it examined. Recruitment procedures then included further scrutiny to ensure checks happened before staff began work. This addresses the recruitment concern; it is a school-wide regulatory finding, rather than a nursery quality grade.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate commitments.
