Nursery at Chapel End Infant School and Early Years Centre

Half-day nursery sessions and full-day care sit alongside one another at Chapel End, giving families different ways to organise the early years. The provision serves children aged two, three and four; Nursery itself caters for three- and four-year-olds. It belongs to Chapel End Infant School and Early Years Centre, with the Early Years Centre based on Brookscroft Road in Walthamstow.
For the universal funded entitlement, Nursery has 40 morning and afternoon places. Families can express a session preference, subject to space. That makes the attendance pattern a practical part of choosing this nursery, rather than a detail to leave until starting.
Play and early language give the nursery day its character. In September 2022, Ofsted found that children participated purposefully in early-years activities and play, while Nursery children developed their listening through rhymes and singing. These are concrete foundations for joining in with a group and paying attention to spoken language.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for young children’s education and care, including their welfare and safety. Chapel End’s admissions policy describes an approach based on play. For parents, the useful distinction is that learning includes participation and relationships: taking a turn, forming friendships and showing care for other children were also features of the early-years experience in September 2022.
Settling is gradual. A team member arranges a nursery visit and works with the family on introducing their child to the setting. Staff discuss separation difficulties with parents, recognising that children adjust at different speeds. The starting process therefore allows for the child’s response, rather than assuming immediate independence.
Each child receives a key person when their place is allocated. This adult stays in contact through settling and beyond, and tracks development using photographs, observations and examples of the child’s work in Special Books. Parents can contribute observations from home. It gives families a continuing contact and brings achievements from both settings into the child’s record.
For additional needs, the school’s Inclusion Manager coordinates support with families and staff and holds the National Award for SENCO. Flourish Specialist Education Services supplies outreach, guidance and training to the school. Families can arrange a discussion through the Early Years Centre office about their child’s needs and next steps.
Lunch is a separate practical choice. The fee policy for September 2025 to August 2026 allowed a healthy packed lunch instead of a charged meal. Families should obtain current charges from the school when arranging care.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. Parents must make a separate application, including when their child already attends Chapel End’s nursery. Waltham Forest’s admission arrangements for 2026/27 contain no nursery-attendance criterion.
Families living in Waltham Forest apply through its admissions service; those living elsewhere apply through their home local authority. The online route is eAdmissions. For September 2026 entry, the deadline was 15 January 2026, so that date belongs to a completed application cycle. Choosing nursery and applying for Reception remain two separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 9am to noon; afternoons run from noon to 3pm. Morning gates open at 8.50am, with collection between 11.50am and noon. Afternoon drop-off begins when gates open at 11.55am, and collection runs from 2.50pm to 3pm. These short handover windows matter when coordinating work or another child’s collection.
The universal entitlement for three- and four-year-olds is 15 hours weekly, normally across 38 weeks. Eligible working families can access 30 hours in term time. Extra childcare hours are charged, and extended care is offered from 8am to 5.55pm. Morning, afternoon and full-day preferences depend on available places.
