Outdoor learning, early reading and family play sessions give George Mitchell's nursery its character. This is the nursery within George Mitchell School in Leyton, an all-through school with an early years phase alongside its primary and secondary phases. Children can join during the term in which they turn three.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 6 and 7 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The useful detail for parents is the combination of purposeful outdoor learning and established group routines.
Reading and play both feature here. In June 2023, children in early years were making a positive beginning in education, including reading; adults chose books to match the phonics children were practising. That links reading material to the sounds being learned, giving children a practical way to use their developing knowledge.
The outdoor learning area also had resources that adults used effectively to support learning. Outdoor space therefore contributes to the educational day. Group time brings a different rhythm: in June 2023, early years children had established routines and settled promptly for carpet activities. For a young child, that means practice in moving from activity to a shared group focus.
Nursery family sessions have included reading together and writing through playful mark making. These give a concrete picture of early learning: sharing books and experimenting with marks, with families involved in the activity. They also connect what happens in nursery with things parents and children can do together.
Family involvement extends beyond applying for a place. Nursery children and parents took part together in a Family Fun session in October 2021, an example of adults joining their child's nursery experience.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school uses Assess, Plan, Do and Review: identifying needs, planning support, putting it into practice and reviewing it. Its team includes a SENCo and a Primary Assistant SENCo. The school aims to identify additional needs early and keep parents informed about progress, making family involvement part of its approach to support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Waltham Forest for the following September; applications take place by January each school year. Keep this distinct from the direct nursery application. Joining nursery is one decision, while obtaining a Reception place requires another application through the normal route.
Nursery applications go directly to the Primary office. Parents can telephone (020) 8539 6198, speak to office staff in person or email early-years@georgemitchellschool.co.uk.
Additional nursery hours attract charges. Contact the school for current charges and contract terms. For calendar planning, primary and secondary phases have different INSET days in 2026/27, so families should use the primary calendar rather than assume both phases close on the same dates.
