Nursery at Newport School

Designing an obstacle course gives Newport’s early years children a practical reason to think about movement and space. It is a telling example of learning here: children put an idea into action, with physical skills developing alongside their understanding of how to move safely.
This is Newport School’s own nursery provision in Leyton, London. At the school’s Ofsted inspection on 29 and 30 October 2024, early years provision was graded Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery inspection grade.
Independence starts with knowing what to do next. Ofsted’s October 2024 findings link early years children’s independence between activities to routines taught as soon as they joined. Children knew how to make those changes sensibly. They were also keen to participate across their learning. For a young child, that gives the day a recognisable structure rather than leaving transitions to guesswork.
The obstacle-course example makes the physical learning concrete. Children designed a course while learning safe movement and how to use space. Planning and moving belong to the same activity: the child has to consider the arrangement, then apply that understanding through movement. It connects thinking with doing.
These examples give parents a practical view of the early years foundation stage (EYFS): learning includes physical development and becoming more independent during everyday activities. The emphasis is on children participating, rather than simply following instructions. Familiar routines support that participation by helping them understand how to move between activities.
Predictability matters for children learning to manage a school day. Early years children quickly learned the daily routines in October 2024. Teaching those routines directly gives adults a concrete way to support children as they become familiar with expectations.
For conversations about additional needs, Newport has Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs). This gives families an identified school role for discussing SEND, separate from a general enquiry.
Attending Newport’s nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception class. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
Treat that application as a distinct decision in your family’s planning. Choosing the nursery for its daily learning and care should not mean assuming that the next school place is secured. Nursery attendance and Reception allocation are separate questions.
Newport School is on Newport Road, Leyton, London E10 6PJ. General enquiries go through the Pupil Data Officer, and the school’s telephone number is 020 8539 4552. There is also a Contact Us form, giving families a written enquiry route alongside the telephone.
Contact timing. Messages through Contact Us are neither monitored nor answered during school closure periods. Factor that into the timing of an enquiry: sending a form during a closure does not bring a response during that period.
