Play, practical making and growing independence shape Sybourn’s early years provision. Children have choices in their learning, with activities designed to encourage exploration and persistence. The Foundation Stage begins from age two, and the school has its own nursery provision. Sybourn Early Years Excellence Centre is at 2a Perth Road, London E10 7PB.
Ofsted rated the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 7 and 8 June 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with play providing the starting point. For parents, that means learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently alongside early work with numbers, books and creative materials. Children explore their surroundings and develop ideas of their own. Trying again when something proves difficult is part of the approach.
Practical activities combine children’s choices with tasks guided by adults. Children build with a purpose, select materials, learn to handle simple tools safely and prepare food with attention to hygiene. These activities give them reasons to plan, make decisions and adjust what they have made. Role-play, dance and art provide further ways to express ideas.
Movement has a physical setting of its own: the outdoor Fundamental skills area. Adult-guided physical activities use the Lancashire PE EYFS scheme of work, alongside opportunities initiated by children. The emphasis is on coordination, movement and control, with healthy choices about activity and food included in the learning.
Nursery phonics begins with Phase 1, developing listening and speaking through attention to everyday sounds and the beginnings of blending and separating sounds orally. Progression to Phase 2 depends on teacher assessment; typically, most nursery children make that move during the spring term. The pace therefore follows assessed learning rather than a single timetable for every child.
In June 2023, early years staff supported children’s independence, language development and vocabulary very effectively. Children managed routines and instructions well and enjoyed learning with other children. Those everyday skills matter in a group session: communicating needs and understanding what happens next help children take part.
A record of each child’s development is shared with parents, giving families a view of their learning. There is also a dedicated SEND contact at send@sybournprimary.net.
School catering accommodates allergies, intolerances and dietary requirements linked to religious beliefs. Parents are asked to discuss their child’s needs with the catering team so that meals can be planned safely.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application, including when their child already attends the nursery. Apply through eAdmissions, or use a School Admissions Common Application Form obtained through the school or local authority. The normal application window runs from 1 September to 15 January. Keep that deadline separate from nursery arrangements.
Morning nursery runs from 9:05am to 11:35am; the afternoon session is 12:45pm to 3:15pm. These are short sessions, so the start and collection times deserve close attention when planning family routines. Paying daycare follows agreed hours and attendance patterns.
For general enquiries, contact the school administration team on 020 8539 4110 or school@sybournprimary.net. The office is open from 8am to 4pm.
