Nursery at Whitefield School

Sensory exploration and familiar songs give Whitefield’s youngest children different ways into learning. The nursery belongs to Whitefield School on Macdonald Road in Walthamstow, a special school where early education is shaped around children’s individual needs. Its early-years curriculum covers ages 3–5, with different approaches for children with profound and complex needs and those with autism or severe learning difficulties.
Ofsted judged the school’s early-years provision Good at the inspection on 10 and 11 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Reaching Out is the pathway for children with profound and complex needs. It combines sensory exploration, predictable routines and interaction with adults, giving children opportunities to explore their surroundings, develop physical control and express choices. Relationships and repetition are part of the learning itself.
Children with autism or severe learning difficulties follow an adapted Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. This provides the foundations for later learning, with an individual curriculum for each child rather than identical tasks for everyone. The school aims to help children communicate their preferences and participate in activities with other people.
Pictures, photographs and symbols sit alongside print in Whitefield’s approach to reading. Spoken and signed stories, rhymes and songs provide other ways to engage with language. In May 2023, early-years children participated in familiar songs and stories, developing readiness for learning to read. Counting involved handling different objects, making early mathematics a practical activity rather than an abstract exercise.
Support extends beyond classroom learning. An occupational therapist attends Whitefield Schools two days a week. Teachers make referrals with parental consent, and families receive advice and reports. Support can address sensory responses, movement and hand skills, as well as everyday care such as eating, toileting and sleep. This gives parents a route to help with difficulties that affect both home and school.
Hot meals can be purchased daily through local-authority catering. Across the school, most pupils eat with classmates in school halls and practise choosing their meal; pupils with more complex needs eat in their classrooms. Kitchen staff and midday assistants receive training in communication and mealtime support.
Parents can raise safeguarding concerns with the safeguarding team by email or through the school switchboard. Families are also asked to tell teachers about injuries at home or changes that may distress their child, helping staff understand what could affect the day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Discuss Reception placement requirements with the school and your local authority’s SEND team.
For Whitefield, placement discussions involve the family, school and local authority’s SEND team. The authority considers whether special-school provision is appropriate, while the school assesses whether it has suitable space and resources for the child’s needs. Discuss the next stage with that team rather than treating nursery attendance as a promise of continued placement.
For enquiries, telephone 020 8531 3426 or email enquiries@whitefield.waltham.sch.uk. Once the local authority concludes that special-school provision would benefit your child, you can arrange an initial informal visit by telephone. Your child need not attend this first meeting. A visit with your child follows if the referral initially suggests that the school can meet their needs.
Travel and parking. There is no visitor parking on site, and nearby street parking is limited. Families travelling to Macdonald Road should allow for those restrictions when planning a visit.
