Nursery at Willow Brook Primary School Academy

Music, performance and learning alongside parents give Willow Brook’s nursery its character. For children aged 3 to 4, this is the nursery part of the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with both part-time and full-time attendance. Families can choose a morning, afternoon or all-day session, giving them three distinct ways to fit nursery into the day.
Based on Church Road in Leyton, the provision combines early learning with opportunities for families to participate. Parents and younger siblings are welcomed to stay-and-play sessions. That makes involvement practical: parents can learn alongside their child, rather than only hear about activities afterwards.
The EYFS curriculum brings together early learning goals and attention to how children learn. Alongside this foundation, children take part in music, performances and computer science, with outings and assemblies also included. These give children different ways to explore ideas, express themselves and participate beyond their immediate classroom activities.
Mathematics uses a mastery approach from Nursery. The school aims for children to understand mathematical ideas deeply and apply what they learn, with curiosity and persistence encouraged alongside subject knowledge. The emphasis is on understanding, rather than simply producing an answer.
Communication has a clear purpose here. At the September 2023 inspection, Ofsted identified the nursery’s emphasis on language and communication as preparation for learning phonics in Reception. The early-years curriculum also followed a deliberate sequence of knowledge, skills and vocabulary, building foundations for subsequent learning.
Each child has a dedicated Key Worker who monitors their development and progress. Children’s work is kept in an individual book that parents can look through and contribute to. This gives families a concrete way to share observations from home and see what their child has been doing.
Stay-and-play sessions sit alongside parent workshops and celebration events. For the start of the academic year, parents’ meetings are arranged within EYFS; the school also holds termly parent evenings to discuss progress. There are several opportunities to join the conversation.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the first contact is the class teacher, with the SEND coordinator involved when further concerns or referrals arise. Makaton signing symbols are used for communication where possible. Support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle, and one-to-one provision depends on individual arrangements rather than being automatic.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives priority. For the 2027/28 intake, nursery children are assessed against the same oversubscription criteria as other applicants. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, using its Common Application Form and meeting the deadline that authority gives.
Learning continuity is a separate matter. At the end of each academic year, transition meetings pass information to new class teachers. For children with SEND, this handover supports continuity of understanding about their needs; it does not confer an admissions advantage.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30 to 11:30; the afternoon session is 12:30 to 15:30. All-day attendance runs from 8:30 to 15:30. These nursery hours are the relevant times for planning collection.

No. For the 2027/28 intake, nursery attendance gives neither a guaranteed place nor priority. Parents must apply separately through their home local authority by its deadline.
Each child has a Key Worker, and parents can view and contribute to the book recording their child’s work. Stay-and-play sessions, workshops and parent meetings provide further opportunities to participate.
Speak to the class teacher first. The SEND coordinator becomes involved where further concerns or referrals require it.
