Nursery at Belleville Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

A self-contained nursery within Webb's Road gives Belleville's youngest children a space of their own. This is the school's nursery provision for three- and four-year-olds: children join during the academic year in which they turn four. Nursery provision is at Webb's Road only, rather than Meteor Street.

Since September 2026, the term-time offer combines full-time attendance with two part-time patterns. A minimum of 13 full-time places is available. For parents, the choice is between a five-day nursery week and a shorter week built around whole days and a Wednesday half-session.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 2 and 3 March 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Stories, dressing-up and rocket-building sit alongside learning to manage a coat, share a game and ask for help. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach here brings learning into everyday activity: communication, independence and relationships develop alongside early reading, writing and number work.

Six themes organise the early years curriculum each year. Children's interests help shape learning, with new practical experiences introduced alongside them. Classrooms, outdoor areas and the lunchhall all form part of the learning environment, so learning extends beyond activities at a table. Belleville's Excellent Learners approach starts in Nursery, encouraging children to ask questions, persist after mistakes and work together.

Sound work has a clear nursery focus. Children distinguish sounds around them and sounds made with percussion, using songs and rhymes as preparation for recognising speech sounds. The phonics programme draws on Letters and Sounds and uses Jolly Phonics actions. This gives children physical prompts alongside what they hear.

In March 2022, early years children practised counting in both directions to build understanding of adding and subtracting. They also answered questions with complete sentences and accurate vocabulary. Regular sound practice helped them approach reading and unfamiliar sounds confidently. The emphasis is on using language and number, alongside learning them.

Care and Support

Belleville says it helps children settle when they join Nursery. In early years, adults teach children to seek help, take turns and resolve disagreements, treating emotional security as a starting point for learning. Putting on a coat or joining a story becomes practice in independence and participation.

Contact with families includes School Spider updates and a parents' evening each term. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher first; the school's SENCO team is another route for discussing additional needs. Individual or small-group interventions supplement class teaching, and external advice can be sought where needed.

School meals are prepared on site by Lunchtime Co. The school is nut free, which matters when packing food. For children using Belleville Beehive, breakfast includes toast and cereals; after-school care includes a light cooked meal or snack.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home borough, with Wandsworth Council managing Belleville's Reception admissions. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is Friday 15 January 2027. Families living in Lambeth apply through Lambeth Council.

Choosing Nursery therefore needs to work for your child's nursery years in its own right. Keep the Reception application as a separate task, even once your child is settled at Belleville.

Practical Information

Full-time attendance runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. One part-time pattern combines Monday and Tuesday, 9am to 3pm, with Wednesday, 9am to noon. The other combines Wednesday, 12.30pm to 3.30pm, with Thursday and Friday, 9am to 3pm. These are term-time places.

All three- and four-year-olds qualify for 15 funded term-time hours; eligible working parents can claim another 15. Full-time families without the 30-hour code pay for the additional hours. Extensions to 3.30pm are charged separately from the 30-hour entitlement. Contact the school for current charges.

Belleville Beehive adds breakfast care from 7.30am and after-school care until 6.30pm, subject to space. Book through SchoolsBuddy for a term, with payment in advance. Nursery applications go directly to the school, with a preference for full-time or part-time attendance. Enquiries go to enquiries@belleville.q1e.org.uk or 020 7228 6727; small-group tours and November open mornings can be booked.
